Merchants To Play Rich fordIn Showdown Game SundayBy CHARLEY CROSBYThe Norwich Merchants, chances for the Empire State League pennant have heen given a shot in the arm by a report given to the Evening Sun sports desk early yesterday. Cortland beat Richford in a doubleheader and Homer defeated Greene leaving Richford in sole possessionof first place with three games to play.Norwich which has lost its last two games seemingly had not much of a chance to even tie for the league title, but that’s what they have going into the Merchant’s final game of theyear, with Richford, This istheir last chance what-so-everto try and bring Norwich’s firstbaseball league pennant home since 1955.The boys of Manager Ed O'Neilhave Cortland to thank for this last hour reprieve, when as Richford, who had only one blemish on its record going into thedoubleheader came out with a stinging double defeat from this Tompkins County town thatspawned Gary Wood, who now does his football quarterbacking with the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League after spending three years with the New York Giants,By winning, Cortland has also jumped back into the pennant picture, but they must beat Greene this coming Sunday to have the same chance as Norwich. For Greene to tie for the pennant they must beat both Cortland and Richford,Richford’s title aspirations can vanish completly if they lose two of the remaining games against Norwich Owego, and Greene. The standings for the top four teams have Richford on top with 8 wins and 3 losses, with games remaining to play with Norwich,Greene and Owego.Cortland’s record is 9 wins and 4 losses with a game left to play at Greene while Norwich, with an identical record must play Richford,Greene puts its 8 and 4 record on the line with Cortland and Richford.Mashers Tie Rams 12-12In Flag Football GameAnother rough tough flag football contest was held last evening letween Halberg’s Rams and Rotundo's Mashers. These two good teams fought to a 12-12 tie at Veterans Field. This was the third of five scheduled contests. The first half was controlled by the Rams who started out strong with a touchdown drive lead by Dave Halberg in the early minutes of the first period. He later scored the Rams secondPlayoffsrow Night“A” diamond. On the “B” diamond, the second place Norwich Shoe Company will meet the third place GLA.Fred Perry, secretary of the league, said that these games will begin at 6:30 p.m. sharp. The public is invited.ReportT.D. in the closing minutes of the half. Their conversion attempts both failed.Rick Marchant was credited with two fine interceptions in the first half, Tom Moncho and Ted Barnes also pulled down errant passes. The second half proved to be the Rams down fall as the Mashers came back to tie their op-ponents. Joe Rotundo scored in the third quarter to make the score 12-6 at the beginning ofthe final period of play.John Maxian, an import, scored the second T.D. for the Mashers to tie the game with three minutes left to play.
