She won local acclaim on the track j first. Then, in the 1932 Olympics at Los Angeles, she won her great-j est laurels, setting: new world records in the only three events in which she competed, namely, the hurdles, javelin and dash.Following her sensational Olympic performance, Babe was j swamped with offers to turn professional. She refused, however,! prefering to remain an amateur.But something happened to curtail her amateur career. She ap~; proved a certain make of automobile, and the merchant of that par- j ticular car took advantage of her boost, using it in an advertisement! in a newspaper. jBosses of the Amateur Athletic Union do not approve of such I things. The result was that the Babe lost her amateur standing. She! was later cleared of the so-called professional charges, but refused an offer of reinstatement. So she became a genuine professional. And she said she wouldn't quit until she made a million dollars* Well, as much as we know. Babe hasn’t made her million as yet, but she’s doing fairly well for herself in this professional business, playing baseball in the summer months and basketball in the winter. And, in her spare moments, she attempts to master this game of! golf, a sport in which she hopes to become a leading figure.According to what we hear. Babe will pitch at least one inning against ihe Westies Sunday. And they say she will prove her adeptness at this game baseball in such a short appearance.Babe Didrickson
