Evening DemocratAssociated Pratt Mambar FORT MADISON, IOWA 52*27 MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 1*** Phona 172 *421Nathan Haley Top Money Winner...26.000 AttendTri-State RodeoAn estimated 26.000 attended the four performances of the 19th annual Tri State Rodeo here over the weekend.The figure includes 5.500 on hand for the Friday night per formance, 7,000 Saturday after noon, 6,000 Saturday evening and 7,500 Sunday afternoon.The Friday night crowd was a record for that performance, but attendance for both the Sat urday afternoon and Sunday afternoon shows were down from those of most other years.Rodeo officials said the weather apparently was the cause of lower afternoon at tendance.The weather was cloudy both Saturday and Sunday mornings.The clouds made such a low ceiling Sunday morning that only 26 airplanes arrived for the rodeo and for the Lions club fly-in. drive-in, walk-in breakfast at the municipal airport.Nevertheless, the Lion* club served 1,200 breakfasts — an amount nearly equal to last year.When the cloud cover began to burn away Sunday, rodeo of ficials received many telephone ticket requests for the afternoon performance.For the third straight year, the rodeo was free of injuries to cowboy contestants.Leading money winner in the rodeo was Nathan Haley cf Hanna, Okla., who picked up $947.20—all in steer wrestling. It was the only event in which Haley competed.Selected queen for the rodeo was Mrs. Pat (Nancy) Meade of Iowa City RR3. Mrs. Meade finished third in the queen competition here a year ago.Mrs. Meade, 23, has a daugh ter, Jackie, 3. Linda McIntyre of Fairfield was thrid.Cross Ticket Sales Rodeo officials today estimated gross ticket sales this year as $56,000.Top gross ticket sales were recorded the first two years of the rodeo when all seats went for the same price. Gross ticket sales last year were $70,551.Once again this year, competition in all of the cowboy events was keen.There were sixty-four entries competing for $10,561 in prize money.Don Reeder of Beaver Falls,Reeder, competing in saddle bronc riding and Brahma bull riding, won $735.47, most of it riding bulls. Reeder won the bull riding event.Haley was the star of the steer wrestling competition. He had a total time of 17.5 seconds on three steers. He tossed his first steer in 5.9 seconds, his second in 5.3 seconds and his third in 6.3 seconds.Top saddle bronc rider was Dennis Reiners of Clara City, Minn. He won a total of $678.01 in this event.Bob Mayo of Grinnell, Iowa, was best among the bareback riders with winnings of $642.17.Tops in calf roping was Sam Womack of Boonsville, Texas, who earned 5548.85.The Tri-State Rodeo was pro duced for the eighth straight year by Harry Knight of Fow ler, Colo.Star of rodeo was Fess Par ker, TV’s Daniel Boone.
