Goelitz Stars in Western DecathalonwHarry Goelitz, of Oak Park, was the fourth most versatile athlete at the SanFrancisco exposition games. In the dec- | nathalon events on Tuesday he was fourthin a large field in the old Greek event, which is a combination of ten regular events. He won first place in the highhurdles and 1,000 meter race. He didwell in the sprints and discus, but fell down in the pole vault and high | 7 jump. • The decathalon is the supremetest of athletic ability because it makesadaptability to a varied program of fatiguing events more potent than specialization in one or two events. Alma Richards, the great Cornell jumper, won I C the decathalon, but the first four were | o well bunched. Until the final event it was impossible to pick the winner fromthe quartet.In the regular events last SaturdayGoelitz placed second in the nationalchampionship 440 hurdles. The C. A. A.team has gone to Los Angeles for an exhibition meet next wdek.
