THE CULLMAN TIMES S^day, August 13, 1967 Page 9With 4-Run 5thBrickyard Baptist softballers, who improved tremendously as the season progressed, won the championship of the local Church League playoffs by whipping league-leading St. John, 5-1, Thursday night at Cullman Junior Highfield.And, they did it with the aid of a four-run fifth inning, plus George Scott’s brilliant pitching which yielded only four hits to a usually potent St. John team.The game was scorelessthrough the first two frames. Then, St. John broke the ice in the third, scoring its only run on a single by Jimmy Hutchison, an infield error and a two out single by Eddie Peinhardt that sent Hutchison dashing home.Only other hits off Scott wereClarence Richter’s single in the fourth and Curtis Peinhardt’s single in the fifth.St. John went down one-two-three in the sixth and seventh innings.Brickyard, meanwhile, wentout in the fifth and scored tour times after one out.Scott and Earl James both singled with one out, then an error followed and Phill Parris stroked a two-run single. Parris later scored when James Laminack was safe on an error.Will Harris completed Brick' yard Baptist’s scoring with ahome run in the sixth.Parris sparked Brickyard at the plate with three straight singles and Bill Beasley and Doug Nix each collected a single, in iddition to Scott’s single and E.James’ single.Junior Fuller whacked a triplein the second, but it didn't leadto any runs.Prior to the title game Thursday, St. John had defeated Nat-tional Screw, 7-4, and Brickyard had smashed First Church of theNazar ene, 12-7.Brent Peinhardt and Johnnyto lead St. John’s 17-hit sluggest in that first-round encounter while BobGretta slugged a triple and double forNationalScrewand Hoss Reid clubbed a pair of doubts.Against Nazarene, the Brick*yarders unloaded a 15-hit barrage which included three doubles by Junior Fuller and a couple of doubles by Phil Parris.Brickyard pushed across 12 runs in the third and fourth an«l finally got going in the seventh, socring five runs, by then, it was too late.Leading hitters for Nazarene were Jimmy Pinkard with a single and two doubles and Cecil Parker with a single and double.
