On the back wooded side, Burk-feardt again settled down to par golf after taking a bogey on both the ninth and 10th holes. He had a 37 on the back side with seven successive pars.Four rivals trail the leader by just one stroke. Bennie Rich of Glen Oak, Ike Salmon of Tuscarora, Steve Tucker of Danville and Frankie Jones of Glen Oak were bunched at 74s. Salmon missed a good chance to tie or perhaps take the lead by three-putting the final hole. Jones, a three-time winner of the tourney before Jimmy Flip pen of Danville took over the honors the last two years, also had a good chance for the lead before he went into trouble on the 15th and went two over on the long 540-yard hole with aRichard Petty Ties RecordOf 18 Iins•even.Defending champion Flippen bad to settle for a 75 and goes into the second round today tide in this bracket with Ernest Jones, Glen Oak, Gene Campbell, Glea Oak, and Dickie Comer of Cane Creek.Each of the four local courses selected 12-man teams for the competition and the top eight low scores will determine the team standings. Glen Oak grabbed team honors Saturday with 60S. Tuscarora was second at 627, Danville third at 632 and Cain Creek fourth at 635. The home-course advantage should help Cain. Creek cut some of Its deficit today.Trophies wiU be awarded the low scorer on each team. A rotating trophy goes to the team winner, and another rotating trophy goes to the overall individual winner. This trophyroust be claimed by the same golfer for three successive years to be retired. Frankie Jones retired one back in 1964.
