Pirates offense lacking at AAA provincial championshipsBy Brook JonesThe North Winnipeg Pirates midget baseball team competed this past weekend at the Baseball Manitoba AAA Provincial Championships.The annual championship was held this year in Deloraine and Reston from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6 and featured 11 teams from across southern Manitoba.The Pirates left for the provincial championships with high hopes for good things to come and managed to compete against the best of the best in the Keystone province but in the end they fell short at the championships.I give our guys full credit as they battled hard, said North Winnipeg Pirates co-coach Gary Dear.According to Dear, the team did all that they could to prepare the group of 15 and 16 year old boys that make up the Pirates AAA team for the baseball contest.We concentrated on our pitching all year, said Dear. (Our pitchers) really showed up this weekend but our hitting was our weakness.The Pirates faced Bonivital Black Sox in their opening game of the 2011 edition of the provincial championships and were defeated 3-1 on Aug. 4.Our pitchers pitched perfectly but we still lost, said Dear. We made three errors in the fourth inning and they scored.fust a few hours later the Pirates took to the mound against the Interlake Blue Jays in their second game of the day, however the team from North Winnipeg was defeated 4-1.Dear noted the Pirates' pitchers threw another great game, but once again it was the errors made against the Blue Jays that enabled Interlake to score runs against thePhoto by Brook JonesNorth Winnipeg Pirates player Drew Allan makes a play at third base during the Pirates game against the St. James A’s on July 22.Pirates.On the second day of competition, the Pirates played Pembina Hills early on the morning of August 5 at a ball diamond in Reston, managing to finally start hitting the baseball, which resulted in North Winnipeg defeating Pembina Hills 5-2.We finally started hitting the ball and Drew threw 108 pitches for the win, noted Dear.North Winnipeg would stay in Reston for their second game on August 5, however, the momentum from beating Pembina Hills did not continue and they lost 4-3.We played a very good team and the made the plays they needed to in order to win, said Dear.
