Annual City TennisTourney UnderwayThe annual city tennis tournament sponsored by the Statesville Recreation commission has got ton underway with twenty-nine matches completed at the Caldwell Park tenniscourts.In men’s singles first-round matches Wilkes KiveU defeated Peter Clayton 64, 7-5; David Meech beat Steve Goforth 6-2, 6-3; number two-seeded Neill McGeachy ousted Walter Morphia 6-1, 6-2; and Gray Lewis, seeded third, overcame Ronnie McLester 6-1, 6-3. Lewis then went on to defeat John Kimmons (who had advanced by default over David Wood) 6-4, 60 in the quarterfinals.In the girls* twelve-and-under action Margaret Ann Fraley’s 6-4, 6-3 upset over number two-seeded Peggy Kivett proved to be the highlight. Number one- j seeded Connie Holton defeated ! Debbie Ladd 6-1, 6-1; Estelle McElewee came from behind to beat Laura Lipshitz 4-6, 6-1. 6-1; and Janet Sweeney defaulted to Pam Morphis in other action.Margaret Wyatt overcame Diane Shoemaker 6-0, 6-1; Pat Johnson defeated Anne Stafford 6-1, 7-5; and M. A. Fraley again upset Kivett in girls' 16-and-under matches. In the only girls' 18-and-under action Nan Holbrook beat Lou McCombs 6-3, 6-2, and Bunny Williams advanced with a bye.Number one-seeded Jerry Williams defeated Danny Turnip-seed 60, 6-0; Mark Katz ousted Burr Fraley 6-2. 6-1: Bryan Andrews, seeded second, beat Douglas Ralston 6-1, 6-4; and Billy Kutteh came from behind to beat Pete Scott 44, 6-1, 64 in boys’ twelve-and-under action.In boys* fourteen and - under matches number one-seeded Andy Dearman defeated Costi Kutteh 6-2, 6-2; Jerry Williams upset Jack Milam 64. 64; Jimmy Epperson, seeded second, beat John Rowe 64, 6-0; Tim Waugh overcame Danny Brown 6-1, 6-0, and Bryan Andrews advanced by default over Charlie Rowe.Liles Suddreth advanced by default over DavJd Wood, and Gary Miller defaulted to Jimmy Epperson in boys' sixteen-and-under action. David Meech, defeated Jimmy Miiholland 6-1, 6-1 in 18-and-under action.In men’s doubles action Roscoe West and Jerry Gibson combined to defeat Peter Clayton and Walter Morphis 6-1, 6-2, and Josh Schneider and Ronnie McLester advanced by default over Albert Schneider and Dick Mills. In twelve-and-under girls' doubles Mary McElewee and Mary-belle Avery defeated Patty Freeman and Sharon Redmond 6-3, 6-1, and C. Holton and M. A. Fraley advanced with a bye.In continued action in the city tennis tournament number one-seeded Jerry Gibson defeated Josh Schneider 6-1, 6-0 in a first-round men’s singles match, while Neill McGeachy beat David Meech 6-0, 6-1 in thequarterfinals.The only champion so far announced is Bunny William# who ousted Martha Lipshitz 6-2, 6-2 in the girls’ 18-and-under division to capture the crown. Miss Williams had previously defeated Nan Holbrook 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals.In other singles matches Mary Donaldson overcame Margaret Ann Fraley 6-3, 6*1; Margaret1 Wyatt defeated Janet Dearman 6-4, 7-5; and Mary Ann Goode came from behind to defeat Peggy Kivett 4-6, 8-6, 7-5 in thelongest match to-date in the 14-and-under girls’ action. Also in this division, Sharon Freeman beat Patty Redmond 6-1, 6-3. In 16-and-under matches Mary Lynn Stovall advanced with a bye and Connie Holton defeated Mary Donaldson 6-0, 60. Kaye Crowson beat Kathy Murdock 1*6, 6-2, 7-5 in a hard-fought women's match.In boys’ singles matches Jerry Williams defeated Mark Kati 6-1, 60, and Bryan Andrews overcame Billy Kutteh 6-2, 6-2 in 12-and-under action. In 16-and-under matches Alan Fink beat Johnny Ladd 9-7, 60, and Andy Dearman defeated Mike Stegall 6-1, 6-1. Josh Schneider upset the number two-seed, Wilkes Kivett 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in 16-and-under action.Three girls' doubles matches were also completed with C. Holton and M. A. Fraley combining to defeat Mary McElewee and Marybelle Avery 6-1, 6-3 in 14-and-under action, whileMargaret Wyatt and Peggy Kivett defeated Anne Stafford and Pat Johnson 6-1, 6-3, and Nancy Holton and C. Holton overcame Donaldson and Stovall 6-3, 8-10, 6-2 in two 16-and-i under matches.Three boys' doubfee matches were also played with Pete Scott and Douglas Ralston teaming to defeat Katz and Danny Turnipseed 6-4, 6-3 in 12-and-under action, while Jimmy Epperson and David Heruska combined to beat J. Williams and Andrews 6-1, 0-2 In a 14-! and-under match, and Fink and Suddreth defeated Epperson and Heruska 6-1, 64 in a 16-and-under match.Garfield Nine Reaches FinalsThe Garfield Little League allstars advanced to the finals of the annual Morganton Negro Midget Basebaf! Tournament last night by taking a 3-2 win over Morganton.George Ramsay, a hard throwing righthander, went the route for the locals, giving up only two hits and fanning 15. Ken-; neth Waddell, James Mills, David Reinhardt, Freddie Maddox and Thomas Morgan led the hitting for the local nine.Tonight the Garfield club seeks the title at 7 p.m.
