IS THRU AS A PLATERNorfolkLincolnRuth Closing Out Careeron Active List With1934 Season.BY THEON WRIGHT.NEW YORK. (UP). Any ball club lacking a manager, and desiring the services of one who is well seasoned, getting along in years but walling to do an extra chore at bat when pinch hitters run out, may acquire same by dorpping a line to G. Ruth, care of the New York Yankees.References, if desired, may be had by glancing over the batting figures in any baseball book from 1920 onward, with particular attention paid to the statistics on balls batted over the fence or intobleachers.Mr. G. Ruth broke down and confessed before witnesses that his underpinnings are not what they used to be, and are too creaky to hold up much longer. His knees get wobbly when he pumps around the bases, and if the ball doesn’t happen to clear the fence—why, it’s a single, and that’s that. Mr. Ruth doesn’t try to stretch themany more. The Bam is completing his twen-ty-firsk season In the big leagues. That would be a long time as night watchman, but when it involves all the heavy duty hitting that has come under the Babe’s supervision, as well as the fly chasing and base jogging, not to mention about thirty miles of free walking to first base, it measures up to quite a stint. The spring of 1920 saw the well known figure of Mr. Ruth hunched on the bench at the Yankee hutch at the stadium for the first time. It was a less sizeable figure than it is now—never what you would call slim w’aisted, however. At present Mr. Ruth looks like an egg on toothpicks. Many a ball has been hoisted over rightfield walls since that spring day. Jack Dempsey and Bill Tilden, just rising to the top ofthe wave, came and \\^nt. Helen j Moody, nee Wills, appeared on the scene three years later and W’ent away a year ago.Ruth’s day goes back much further, of course—back to 1914. But it was the punch, not the pitch, that made the Babe.Squatting on the bench at Fenway park, he admitted he was about ready to fold up. He also revealed the extent of his secret ambitions.“I’d like to tie up with some club as manager—maybe do a little pinch hitting on Saturdays andSundays.”That’s good stuff. A young fellow getting his start should be ambitious. Maybe the Babe could get a cause in his contract giving him a cut on the gate—providing he’dbe willing to do a bit of barking for the hot dog concession on week days when the club was playing Cincinnati or the White Sox.(Copyright, 1934.)Camera Resigns Title.ROME. (AP). The resignation of Primo Camera as heavyweight champion of Italy to “open the field for youths” was announced by the Italian boxing federation. This is in keeping with Premier Mussolini’s policy that no post in business, sports or any other line be held so as to shut off unnecessarily the rising generation. Car-nera’s action was described as entirely voluntary. The federation opened competition for the title, with which will go a special belt and cup offered by Carnerg, former world's champion.
