RUHLIN IS DEFEATED.Was Knocked flat In lb#* Mith Houndof a Flare# Battle.New York, Aug. 11.—Bob Fitzsimmons, of Australia, but now an American citizen, met Gus Ruhlin, theAkron giant, last night before the Twentieth Century club at MadisonSquare Garden and won by knocking the Ohioan down and out in the sixth round.Fitzsimmons did the trick cleanly and cleverly** It wsui a fierce and bloody battle while it lasted and at times it looked as il Ruhlin wouldget the better of the older man. but Fitzsimmons at the proper time would cut loose with his fearful body blow**, i which finally snuffed out the Ohio boxer’s light. The betting all along had favoredFitzsimmons, many wagers at the rate of 100 to 80 on Bob being made. At the ring side, however, there was a flush of Ruhlin money which fore ed the odds to take a turn in Ruhlin'* fat or at the rate of 100 to 90. Thisstate of affairs did not last long, however, and by the time the men put up their hands for the opening round they were equal favorites, even moneybeing the rule.Fitzsimmons conceded about 32 pounds to Ruhlin and this was a serious handicap. But as the result showed, Fitzsimmons was equal toi the task he had set himself and wonout with that terrible aolar plexus blow which whenever it landed shook Ruhlin from head to foot. Fron. the word “go” the men started in with hurricane like force. Both men werewild at time*, but Fitzsimmons was always the quicker to steady himself Fit* left the ring five minntes after he had delivered the wfMBltig punch, but it took Ruhlin 13 minutes to come around sufficiently to be able to walk to his dressing room. Fitzsimmons was still a little bit dazed | when he reached his room, and he asked if ft was not the fifteenth round in which the fight was finish-i ed. Be soon cam** around and indulged in a hearty laugh. “Well, I’m | an old fellow and a has-been, eh? Well, I guess I was good enough for Ruhlin. That was as tough a battle as ever I went through, but Fra still good enough for a few mors.”
