The Doily Register, Horrisburg, Illinois Poge Eight MondoyMiners end season with twin lossesThe Saline County Miners saw their season come to an end this weekend as they lost a pair of games to the Mt. Vernon Kings in the Coal Belt League playoffs at Rend Lake College.The Miners, who had murdered Mt. Vernon 21-4 in Harrisburg last week, lost 8-7 Saturday, then gave away a 13-6game Sunday.Mt. Vernon advances into the four-team semifinal series with the win overthe Miners.In Saturday's game, the Miners never led but were always in the game.Down 2-0 in the third, the Miners tied it with four hits, including RBI singles by Dave Montfort and Mike Milstead.Down 5-2 in the sixth, the Miners got a run back as Kenny Murphy singled and scored on a double by Norm Garrett.The Miners were down 6-3 in the top of the seventh but got two runs with the key being a run-scoring triple from Mike Jones who later scored on a wild pitch.Mt. Vernon made it 7-5 in the last of the seventh before the Miners got two more in the eighth on a Norm Garrett homer to tie the game.Damian Havens, who had come on in relif of Mike Jones in the sixth inning, allowed a leadoff double in the last of the ninth, then after a walk left men at first and second, a ball got past Mike Jones at short and the winning run scored.Sunday, the Miners were full of errors. They made four errors in the bottom of the second, allowing Mt. Vernon to score six times and the game was never close.Down 9-2 in the fifth, the Miners scored three times to make it look a bit more respectable.
