This means that for Norwich to tie for the Empire State League pennant, Richford would have to lose two of its remaining games against Cortland which is a doubleheader, Greene and Norwich,If Richford loses three of these games and Greene and Cortlandwin all of theirs, Norwich would end up in a tie for the pennant with these two teams. For Norwich to win the pennant outright, Richford has to lose three games while Greene and Cortland lose one each providing manager Ed O’Neil’s boys win their last two games.Since the last time Norwich played Owego, Owego has won its last five games including Richford. It seems, according to the Richford players, that this week’s visitors have acquired one of the best pitchers in the league.Norwich has yet to be beaten at home and if the rumor is true about Owego’s new found strength, this week’s game could shape up to be one of the best this year. In any event much action will be afforded to the supporters of the Merchants.Although the crowds have not been too good this year, it has been better than those in the past few years. As of last week’s game against Richford, Jerry Parker’s batting average has climbed over the .500 mark to .510.Mike O’Neil’s average went up 20 points to give him a .444 mark on the year. Most of the averages went down considerably, but the Merchants still have four others hitting.300 or better.Dave O'Neil has .311, Don Goodwine 302, Cliff Stone 301, and Dave Petley in .300 on the nose.Fred Zahner has made the best recovery as he has gained 39 points since three games ago, to give him an average of .280.Norwich’s last two games of theregular season are at home and for real good ball games, relax at Veterans’ Park on a Sunday afternoon where the action is.
