OLD ALEX ARRIVES IN GOTHAM FIRST TIME WITHOUT TEAM1cNEWTevelandYORK, Aug. S. — Grover Alexander came to NewYork today for the first time without a baseball uniform. He arrived alone on “business” in marked contrast to his arrival back in 1911, when he tumbled off the train with the Phila delphia National League baseball club.The famous old pitcher is lonesome. He admits it. “There's no use denying the facts,” he drawled. “It seems mighty strange being hepe alone without the boys, the excitement of before the game time, and my bag seems strangely empty without any baseball equipment.”Not Through“But I’m not through with baseball. It may think it’s through with me but it’s wrong. I hope to be in there swinging ’em across for a major league outfit next year. I plan to go to Hot Springs about six weeks before the 1931 season starts and try and get in shape.I| “You know,” he continued, “I'm not the rounder they believe I am, FI Iadmit I drink. Always have. I've had | my beer ever since I was knee-high to a duck. But if I drank all the | liquor credited to me—well, I just! couldn’t hold it all.” «IOld Alex looked about the same j way he has for the past ten years. The same stooped shoulders and weather-beaten face, and he talked j with the same, deliberate drawl.Arm Is Okay | “But I’ll tell you one thing ” Alex ! said. “If I had my whole baseball life to live over again I’d never drink a drop. That is, outside of a glass or two of good beer.” j His pitching arm, according to Alexander, is about as good as it has been for the last five years. It’s not j his arm that bothers him, but his legs, he said, j After being given his unconditional release by the Philadelphia club, Alexander went to the Dallas team of I the Texas League.“The sun got me there, he said, j “The first game I pitched it was 112 in what little shade there was. Wlion the seventh inning rolled around it •wasn’t a bit less than 240.”From Dallas, where he was released, Alex headed for Toledo in the American Association.
