South Bend Indians Seek To Sign AlexLouie Batchelor Wires Offer Of $150 To Pitching Ace For Sunday GameAn offer of $150 to pitch against Bill Neisen’s Chicago Pyotts atSouth Bend Sunday for the South Bend Indians was forwarded to Grover Cleveland Alexander, former National league pitching ace, from here yesterday by Louie Batchelor, South* Bend promoter and owner of the Indian club.In his offer for the Sunday contest, Batchelor also announced that he would offer Alexander a contractfor the balance of the season. TheIndian club, one of the premier semi-pro teams in the middle west, has a great record against some of the strongest teams in the centra! states.Covey In South Bend If Alex accepts the offer and goes to South Bend for the balance of the season, it will give the northern Indiana city two of the greatest pitchers of all time, Alex and Stanley Covelskie. After gaining his release from the New York Yankees a year ago, Covey joined the Indians, but was later turned loose and took over the manager duties of the South Bend Falcons, a club that appeared recently at the Eden Springs park here against the House of David. Sunday Covey and his club will battle the Buchanan Blues at Buchanan.Alexander, who for more than 20 years was one of the greatest pitchers in major baseball, has been released by three clubs this season. After failing to prove good enough for the majors, the Philadelphia club of the National league, handed him his walking papers. After signing with the Dallas club in the Texas league the once great star failed to keep in good playing condition and was released for a second time.•Ditched’ 14,000 Fan*The Toledo club of the AmericanAssociation club then offered Alexa contract and he signed to finishthe season with the Mud Hens,Claiming that he was sick, Alexfailed to report to the association club last Sunday and some 14,000 fans, who turned out to see him inhis Toledo debut, were “ditched,”because Alex failed to appear.Now Batchelor is seeking to sign up the 1920 world series hero, who remains a free agent.
