Playing the kind of game which they had displayed earlier in the season land of which they were always cap-|able, the Gettysburg base ball team j Saturday afternoon captured the J fifth of the series with Hanover by the 1 score of 3 to 2. A large number of the faithful accompanied the outfit to1 York County and noisily voiced their( approval as, from time to time, the ; Gettysburg players showed that they [were again back in form and ready for further conquests.Stair, lately of Hagerstown, and now signed by Gettysburg for the remainder of the season was in the box for the locals and had Hanover going from start to finish. In both the seventh and ninth innings Hanover had the bases full but were unable toscore due to Stair’s clever work and the support back of him. And just here is the cause to which many fans attribute the disasters of the past few weeks. They claim that up to Saturday I Gettysburg never had a pitcher on whom dependence could be placed— that Rohrbaugh and Bradshaw were very fortunate and that, when the opponents fin-lly did get wise to them, the team realized there was no hope of winning.-i to return to Saturday's game.■ ■ It started badly for Gettysburg, lithe second inning Herman got to first on a pass, took third when Essick’1-grounder bounded false and both } i scored on Small’s single to cente; s! Umpire Lawrence claimed Starry left the base before the ball was caught and the run did not conn It was not until the sixth that Gettysburg scored. Stair hit for one base Price, who was playing third, got J four balls and Plank sacrificed both a [base. John Bream hit a rattling one •through Eline at third and both scor-I ed, Bream going to second, and taking | third when Small at home plate dropped the ball. Small threw high to Eline to catch him and Bream scored ‘with what proved to be the winning * run. Weimer and Jack Starry followed with hits but Norman Starry was Ian out and the scoring for the daj 1 over.In Hanover’s half of the sixth Herman fiied to Price who doubled his (man at third after he had reached j there on a long three bagger. Again | in the seventh Hanover was daneer-|ous. Three got on base by two hits . and a man hit by pitched ball. No one * 'was out but Diehl knocked a hot one* I to Stair who doubled at third. The ’ next man was an easy out.The ninth was the most exciting period of a game filled with tense situations. Essick for Hanover knocked out a two base hit, Small got a s pass, and Scberdel was safe on a t bunt. The bases were again filled with no one out. Diehl bunted along the first base line but Ira Plank was wise. } followed the ball and allowed it to* roll foul, just inches from the* base. Diehl was soon out on a high one to Oyler. Ess.ck tried ro scorer frcm third but was out when Dannie I Skelly fell and touched him as he i raced by. Hostetter flied out to Jack s Starry and the game was over.’ All interested in the success of the, team are elated over their return to*r foim. lt;*re willing to forget past of-- fenses. congratulate them over Satur-! day’s victory and hope for more of the early season stuff during the com-s ins1 weeks.
