Base Ball Consumption.From the New York Herald.During a single season the consumption of base balls is enormous, it beingestimated bv exnerts that 6.000.000 passinto the bands of the players of ail ages.balls are made bvThe 5 and 10-centmachinery of scrap leather, which is first shredded and then soaked, afterwhich the pulp-like mass goes through a stamping or moulding machine, which forms a solid leather ball. The coveris also put on by machinery. In thehands of a boy this ball will be serviceable for a week or two. There are 3,-000.010 5-cent and 1.000.000 10-cent ballsmanufactured and sold every year.The higher grades of balls are made almost entirelv bv hand and of materialaccording to price. Up to 50 cents cotton yarn and leather scrap cores are used, the next grade having rubber cores wrapped with cheap woolen yarn. The utmost care is taken in professional grades, for they must be able to sustain the hardest usage and retain theirshape and good qualities whether wet or dry. The boys’ five and ten-cent balls cost them $250,000, while in the higher grades the amount runs up into the millions. Fullv 2.000 men andwomen earn a living making theseballs, their collective earnings beingnearlv $1,000,000.A
