Teener All-Stars Nipped, 3-2Second Game SaturdayBy BHI ClarkIt was a game of frustration for the Bedford County Teener All-Stars. They left ten men on base, unable to come up with a key hit on several occasions, and dropped a 3-2 game to the Junaiata All-Star team on a pair of unearned runs Thursday evening at Joel Swope Field.The loss puts the locals a game in the hole in the VFW Teener Area 7 finals. They’ll try to even the series at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bellwood-Antis High School field wherethey’ll meet the Juniata VFW*National All-Stars in the second game of the best-of-three series.If Bedford wins the second game, a third contest will be played on Sunday, at 1:30, again at Bellwood, because the Altoona area team won the first game of the series.Junaiata got on the board in the first inning in what was to be a low-scoring game. Joe Irwin singled with one out, Terry Baum walked and the runners moved up on steals. A sacrifice fly to center field by Jim Tomassetti.Bedford tied the game in the fourth. Mark Clark reached on an error and Ken Rose singled to putrunners on the comers with none out. Rose stole second. A bouncer tothird by Ansel Shircliffe held the runners and recorded the first out.On a suicide squeeze attempt, Mark Donaldson failed to hit the ball and Clark was caught in a rundown between third and home. Dortaldson walked and Larry Steaeh followed on a base on bails, loading the bases. The winner will represent Area 7 in the state teener tournament at Altoona on August 8-13.Bedford County won the first game of the first-round series by an 11-3 count on Saturday at Connellsville, then downed the visitors Sunday 9-5.The Juniata VFW Nationals also topped their first round opponent, Tryone, in two games, winning Saturday 10-0 and Sunday 9-5.The second game of the Area 7 finals will be held at Altoona on Saturday at 1 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played Sunday at 1:30 at the site of the first game winner.In Sunday’s game, the Bedford County Teener all-stars eliminated Connellsville by a 9-5 count to advance to the Area 7 finals against Juniata’s VFW National all-stars, Don Elliott led the way with five RBI.Bedford fell behind 5-1 early in the game, but came back strong in the fifth and sixth innings to take the series in two games.Bedford picked up five runs in the fifth to go ahead 6-5, and addedtkroa mArp in Jhp civthBedford's first run came in the second inning when John Topper scored on a Elliott single. The run tied the game at 1-1.A running catch in left field by Larry Steaeh robbed Connellsville of an extra base hit and saved a run.A pair of homers by McCauley and Warrick in the fourth gave Connellsville a 4-1 lead and a run in the fifth made it 5-1 before Bedford came back.John Sigel reached on an error, Keith Engle singled, and Mark Clark walked to load the bases in the Bedford fifth. Topper walked to push across one run and Don Elliottdoubled in two more. Ken Rose wanted to reload the bases. Steaeh doubled in the tying and winning runs.Bedford added three insurance runs in the sixth. Engle was hit by a pitch, Mark Clark hit into a fielder’s choice that erased Engle, Topper walked and Elliott ripped a three-run homer.Ken Rose pitched five innings and Scott Beegle came on in relief for the final two.. He fanned the first batter. After a blooper fell in for a single, the runner Irwin, was cut down trying to steal by Don Elliott, throwing to Ansel Shircliffe. Clark finished up with another strikeout.He was rolling along in the sixth with two outs notched when he gave up a walk and ati infield single. A sharply-hit ball to short was bob-bled and the bases were filled. A critical single by Wagner drove in two runs, breaking the deadlock. Bedford County got out of the inning without further damage,The fifth and sixth innings were symbolic of Bedford County’s troubles at the plate.In the fifth Elliott walked with one away and stole second. Clark hit a nice shot to right, but right at the fielder. Elliott tagged and moved to third. Rose was called out on strikes to end the inning.In the sixth leadoff batter John Sigel walked, but Donaldson flew out to center on a line drive, Steaeh hit a high, long ball.down the left filed line for the second out, and Ostinowsky hit a long fly to center to end the inning.Bedford got off to a strong start in the seventh with Scott Beegle collecting his second hit of the game and John Topper drawing a walk. Elliott hit into a fielder’s choice, erasing Topper at second. On a double steal Elliott was nailed at second, but Beegle scored, cutting the lead to a run.Mark Clark singled and Ken Hose walked.
