Fails to Show Up for Gameat Toledo—Reported to Be “Very Sick.”Chicago, Aug. 6— (A.P )—-Grover j Cleveland Alexander, once one of baseball’s greatest pitchers, has ; been released for the third time this season.He was notified by the Toledo American association club last night that his services were not desired. He had never even worn a Toledo uniform.| Old Pete” was released by theDallas team of the Texas league | several weeks ago after being taken out of the box. He previously | had been given his freedom by the Philadelphia Nationals.Failed to Show up.Then the Toledo Mudhens signed him up. Alexander was to have pitched his first game at Toledo Sun day. Photographers were there, even sound movies were to be taken, the park was filled with Thousands who came to see the former world series here in his much bal-lyhooed comeback attempt. But he failed to appear.Oscar J. Smith, president of the Toledo club, in Chicago attending a meeting of minor league executives- heard Alexander was in town and went to the hotel room where the pitcher was supposed to Ik staying. He was met by a nurst who refused to allow him to enter Smith asked what Alexander in | tended to do and the nurse replied, 1 can’t tell you anything about it.I suppose when there is anything to be said, Mr. Alexander will com-i municate with you.”**A Very Sick Man.’’The nurse refused to take any message to her patient so Smith went down to the lobby and wrote the following telegram:The Toledo baseball company hereby notifies you that the deal foryour services is called off and the Tuledo buoebal! company doc: not desire your services.”It was learned that Alexander came here Friday on his way to Toledo and that he had been under the ; care of a nurse ever since The | nurse declined to say who was with him or what the nature of his illness ; was.
