Merchants Travel To For Empire State ShowdownThe Norwich Merchants travel to Richford this Sunday in a“must game for the Locals.Richford has yet to be beaten, although they were tied with Cortland in a rained-out contest whichwill have to be replayed if its affects the final standings.For the Merchants to close in on the league leaders, they willhave to win or be three gamesout.Norwich beat Cortland last Sunday in a doubleheader with pitchers Don Goodwine and Keith Vanderlipp hurling complete games. There two wins have pushed the Merchants into undisputed possession of second place and could serve as a springboard to overtake the winners of the Empire State League the last two years. Norwich’s record is now 9 wins and 2 losses.Richford has only played onetough game this season which wasa 3 to 2 win over Greene early in the season when they werestocked up with Cornell University players. This leaves Richford with two games against Cortland, one against Greene and two more against Norwich, so as it stands, they have not wrapped up the league title by a long shot.Norwich will go into the game with the currently hot-hitting Jerry Parker, who is clobbering the ball at an even .500 clip on the year, a probable starter in left field.Mike O’Neil with an average exceeding .400 with start at sec-ond base with Duane Shriver at shortstop.Don Goodwine is hitting better than .350 will be the probable starter at first base and Fred Zahner, who after having a bad start is hitting close to .300, will be at third base.Dave Petley will be in right field and Cliff Stone will be in centerfield. The Merchants to be sure, is the best hitting team in the league collectively and can win the ball-game by putting these necessary requirements together.MOVINGAGAIN
