FIGHT SPOILED BY THE REFEREETen Round Go Between Blaine Brewer and Milt Kinney Proves a Fiasco.BREWER GETS DECISIONAfter Both Men Had Fouled Several Times Moss, the Smoky Hollow Giant Rules Against KinneyWhat could have been and should have been a fast ten round fistic bout turned out to be the worst kind of a fiasco last night, when Blaine Brewer of this city, was given the decision over Milt Kinney, Sioux City, on an alleged foul. The blame can all be laid at the door of Referee Moss, the Smoky Hollow giant, who showed a woeful lack of knowledpe of the game. From the start the battle was nothing but a catch-as-catch-can wrestling bout, simply because of the inability of the referee to make the men break away in the clinches.Reft alone Brewer and Kinney would have put up a fast fight, as the visitor is undoubtedly a handy man. while Brewer's ready fights and left, coupled with his ability to stand severe punishment. makes him a man always to he feared in a ring encounter. But jus: when the fighters were warming up to their game, in the opening mix-up of the third round Moss called a foul on Kinney for hitting in the clinches and gave the decision to Brewer. This would have been perfectly right if the men had been fighting within the rules, but they had not. Twice Brewer threw Kinney to the floor with a wrestling hold, and once he jumped on his opponent after throwing him Tn fact in the matter of fouls Kinney had more to complain of than Brewer.THE CURTAIN RAISER.Preceding what was booked as the main fight was a curtain raiser between two unknowns. The men were as much unknown after the battle as before and so bum an exhibition did they put up that no one seemed to care to become better acquainted with them. Their names were announced as Jake Van Kirk, of this city, and W. Yoacum. of some other place, it does? nof. matter where. After four rounds of lost opportunities with an occasional punch exchanged, the bout was declared a draw. It was tame, dreadfully tame.MOSS SHOWS BUM WORK.The preliminary bout was refereed by Jimmy Owens and it was handled *o the queen’s taste. Then the main event was called and Moss, the ^.ioly Hollow miner, stepped into the ring. The fight fans knew what they were up against, especially those who saw Moss defeat Jack Hall recently. Moss is a big man but all he knows of the fighting game will not hurt him. At the beginning instead of separating the men in the clinches he would yell for a break, which neither was willing to undertake while free punches were easy. But in the second and third rounds Moss went up in the air and he would toss the fighters around after a clinch in a crazy manner. Once he grabbed Kinney round the neck and nearly twisted that member off.THE MILLING.When the fighters got together they at once went into a clinch. They repeated this just five times, while the crowd was yelling for fight. Then came the rough and tumble. Brewer had Kinney to the floor twice in this round, hut not on nunehes. It looked like Brewer’s round, yet Kinney was plainly playing horse.Brewer led off In the second* rushing his opponent with rights and leffs. Kinney went to a clinch and ent in a stiff right in the breakaway. An exchange of rights and lefts followed and then Kinney got busy. He rushed his opponent about and showed nun'h fhe stronger at the gong. Then came the finish. Kinnov rushed at the bell and the men clinched. They broke nicely, but were back again in another clinch in a twinkling. Tn the getaway Kinney swung a left and Moss called the foul that gave the fight to Brewer and raised a howl from the fans who wanted to see the bout go on to a finish.LEFT A BAD TASTE.The fight left a bad taste in one’s mouth and such an ending should have been avoided. The game has been worked up to a nice point in Ottumwa. Tt rather weakens confidence to see a good match spoiled by a referee who is not equal to the occasion, and the promoters will do well to avoid this in the future if they wish to see the sport thrive here.
