Then It broke down again, and the crowd prepared to leave, but at 8.80 the officials announced that the machine was repaired, and that Taylor would makeanother attempt at once.Taylor was sent around the track fora warming Up behind a triplet steered by Jimmy Bowler. The major rode a mile at a fast clip, and the motor wasstarted with the colored man sticking to the rear wheel. The speed was gr adually increased until the three-quarter mark was reached, when M unger turned her wide open/* The jump was so quick that for a moment Taylor fellbehind, and when the machine and therider crossed the starting line he was a yard back, but In a final effort themajor shoved his front wheel close to the rear wheel of the machine a few' seconds after the officials' watches had been snapped. /The eye of ewery timer rested on the quarter mark, and as the machines flew by it one of them shouted: * 20 l-5s, this at a pace of lm 80 4-5s; second quarter wa» 19 l-5s. This was a lm 18 4-S* dip, Just two-flfths of a second slower than the time made by Joe Downey on a straightaway course. _The third quarter was made in the same time as the first. • ■A triplet was in readiness to pick up ■the rider at the ljust quarter, but as ft turned toward the pole the machine and Taylor swerved aside and shot by it as if it had been standing still. “Now spurt, cried Monger, and Taylor heard.
