27 teams take part--Canoe race goes on despite windsEven though high winds on Lake Plantagenet caused the starting point to be changed, the second annual Bemidji Canoe Kace was held Sunday A total of 27 teams in five divisions competed in the race which was sponsored by Jeff Sandberg's Septic Tank Service and the Bemidji Funeral ChapelThe wind was a problem in mire ways than one however. It was not possible to duplicate last year's mass start and racers took off at 30 second intervals from under a bridge where County Hoad 11 meets the Mississippi RiverThe racers paddled a short length of the river to Lake Irving which was also windy and four canoes capsized or swamped in crossing the lake Only one of the boats required assistance from tfe patrol Ixiats which were on the lake to assist in case of trouble Racing rules state that if a boat can be righted without assistance, it is not disqualified and may continue to race.Once across Lake Irving, the racers followed the river to Lake Bemidji and paddled across to the finish line at the public landing at Diamond PointThe fastest over all winning time of 49 minutes 46 seconds was registered by Alan Rudquist and Maren Smith of Grand Rapids in the USCAmixed division Second in that division were Jerry Hidde. Elk River and Peg Bohanan. Minneapolis. Third place went to Robin Baker, Cohasset and Joan VV’yannet, St. PaulIn the USCA Men division, first place went to Kare Lid and Robert Walsh, Park Rapids: second place winners were Ted Fulton, Solon Springs, Wis . and Don Carlson, Grand Rapids Tom and Larry Johns of Minneapolis took third place honorsThere were only two teams entered in the USCA Junior division and Stewart Bastian. Cambridge and Bill Maresh, Blaine, came in first Second place went to Corey Baker, Cohasset and Jerry Arnold. Grand RapidsAll the top finishers in the Novice Stock division were from Bemidji. They were: Allan Lamon and Dan Ewert, first Keith Hanson and BillpHimmelright, second; Pete Mason and Greg Drury finished thirdTwo Bemidji ana won the Elite Stock division, which is for expenenced racers They are Sam Mason and Tim Mohler Park Rapids however was the home town of the•other winning teams Dean Walsh and Darrell Bruns were second and Demar Hahn and Jeff Johnson finished third Although this year's race was not sac turned by the USCA, the third annual Bemidji Canoe Race scheduled for next year will beJ Coming Sat., Aug. 6th!
