Fla lt;UPI — Barbara Jo Palmer, Florida State University’s newly appointed women's athletic director, says fund raising for girls’ sports will be an immediate job priority Ms Palmer was named to the job Tuesday She succeed Marlene Fumell. who resigned recently to enter private businesI THE NAME OF THE GAME IS SALES“I know money is a problemwith women’s athletics at Florida State so I will devote a lot of time to raising additional funds so our teams can continue to compete on a national level,” she said “I believe in the education of the athletes Itis just as important, even more so, as the sport in which the athlete participates ”Ms Palmer, 28, received her undergraduate degree in recreation from Florida State in 1970 and earned a masters inleisure services at FSU in WAiSince October 1974, she headed Impact Enterprises, Inc , a group providing leisure services and recreation therapy for the retarded and other handicapped groups She also has worked as a recreation supervisor in Merritt Island She took the FSU job because “I wanted to get back into sports ”“I believe in women’s athletics, she said ‘‘If they would have had a women’s intercollegiate program while I wasAgoingschool. I would have participated ”FSU athletic director John Bridgers said Ms Palmer will aid the entire sports program at Florida State ‘‘She comes to us very highly recommended and extremely well qualified in the areas of budgeting, personnel, public relations and personnel management,” said Bridgers We believe there isn’t a better person to head our successful women’s program than Ms. Palmer ”
