Steirfc HumberUStaff photographerOrrum’s Freddie Ellis is tested on treadmillAthletes prep for school year in Lifestyles Center programSAMMY BATTEN Sports EditorTraining camp opened early this year for eight Robeson County athletes who took part in a special summer conditioning program sponsored by the Southeastern General Hospital’s Lifestyles and Fitness Center.The athletes, representing five county high schools, participated in a six-week program designed to improve performances in their individual sports. Under the direction John Wayrzymak, coordinator of the Lifestyles Fitness Center’s Sports Medicine department, and staffers Ray Ashley and Chris Giambeiluea, the athletes underwent two-hour workouts, five days a week.Taking part in the program were Lumberton Senior High cross country and track star Frankie Prevatte; Pirate soccer players Brad Whitfield, Tommy Stevens and B.J^Sweeney; St Pauls High football-player Barry Ivey; South Robeson High girls’ basketball player Toni Killens; Red Springs’ girls* basketball player Karen Carlisle; Orrum High’s girls' basketball player Amanda McCoy and Raider gridder Freddie Ellis.“When we first opened the Fitness Center we felt we needed to develop a relationship with the area high schools,” Wayrzyniak said. “We wanted them to know what we had here in the way of treatment for athletic injuries.“We decided that running a conditioning camp was a good way todo that. We wrote letters to all the athletic directors of the county schools and ask them to consider male and female athletes, that were outstanding athletically as well as academically, and that weren’t going away to summer camps. Fairmont was the only school we didn’t send a letter because we weren’t under contract with them. We hope to include them in the future.“We had nine schools nominate two kids each. Some said they didn’t have two kids that could hehere every day for six weeks. We had some problems with kids going on vacation and to camps, but the ones we got have been pretty good about attending and putting forth a good effort.”The athletes underwent a week of testing before starting the program in order to measure their improvements.“We measured their cardio-endurance on a treadmill, and also did tests to measure their upper-Please see PROGRAM, page 2BRed Springs’ Karen Carlisle works out on rower
