BY JEFF BORDENDoes history really repeat itself? In the case of the Medina County Pony Tail Tournament, last year’s Brunswick upset of the top-seeded team may well be rerun. The Devil’s took a giant step towards re-writing the history book last night as they blocked Medina’s championship bid, 8-0; The Medinians—with a mark of two wins and no losses—were no match for the battling Brunswick team.Booming batting and fine fielding did much of the job for the Devil’s, as their hitters consistently found the holes in the Bees' defense and cracked balls through them. On the field the northerner’s played sharp ball, as the entire team worked together for the win. After a scoreless first inning Brunswick came alive in their half of the second stanza. After Linda Barnik and Pat Follansbee were walked by Medina pitcher Mary Lynn Lemmer, Terri Carque singled to right field. Bonnie Barnes and Bonnie Britton also cracked out solid hits to bring in their teammates, though they were unable to score. As throughout the rest of the game, the Medina girls were unable to gamer any safeties. Brunswick pitcher Brenda Sebek struck out one, in the last of the second, and allowed only two hits.A scoreless third period preceded a walloping fourth inning for the Devil’s. Pat Follansbee walked, and her teammates Diane O’Malley and Terri Carque singled. However,Miss Follansbee was unable to reach home, as the Bee fielderstagged her out. Also getting inthe fourth were Missess Barnesand Britton.A cold Medina hitting squad came up to bat in their half of the inning. Loretta Popovic was the only girl to grab asafety, but she was stranded on first. The score after four innings was, Brunswick — 5, Medina — 0.In the fifth inning, the Brunswick squad lackednothing at bat as theyexploded for three more runs, the last they would get. Immediately, the Bee-ettescollected an out, but thisdidn’t stop the torrent of hits coming from the Devil bats. Pam Sebek, Pat Follansbee, and Diane O’Malley all scored for the rampaging Brunswick ite’s.Medina could make no bid on catching the Devil’s as Paula Griesinger was the only Bee to hit a safe ball.A double play in the sixth inning helped the Bee-ettes stop the Devil’s cold. BonnieBritton led off for Brunswickwith a single, but teammate Noreen Heazlit flew out. Robin Perry also flew out, though it looked like she might get credit for a sacrifice. Miss Britton, well on her way to safely snatching second, was caught dead center as the Medina outfielder quickly threw in the ball. Though she tried, Miss Britton was unsuccessful in regaining the safety of first base. The throw was good, and hung the last out on the Devils.Medina’s batting couldn’t match their fielding again in the bottom of the sixth. Once again, Mis Sebek allowed the Bees only one hit. The last stanza, showed the Devil’s ahead, 8 — 0.Efficient Medina fielders dealt with the Devil threat in the top of the inning, and disposed of them with little trouble. But Medina had a lot of catching up to do. The first two Medina batters made outs. Then Roni Crum stepped up to the plate. The Bees’ first baseman promptly hammered out a single to rightfield. This brought up Robin Dunning, who walloped out a line drivedown the rightfield foul line, advancing Miss Crum to third. But though the Bees were quite dose to at least breaking the shut-out, they couldn’t collect as Medina’s third girl grounded out.A final tally showed that the Blue Devil’s had given up only six hits to the Medina team, though the Bees’ recieved credit for several fine fielding plays. Going the length for Brunswick was Brenda Sebek, while Mary Lynn Lemmer was given the loss. Miss Lemmer did not go the length, of the game, as she was relieved by Sue Ellsworth in the fifth inning. With Brunswick's strong win over the home team, they forced the Medinian’s into another contest with the Devils. Whoever wins the game tonight will be the 1969 Pony Tail Champs of Medina County.SCORINGBRUNSWICK 030 230 0-8 li 3 MEDINA 000 000 0-0 6 3
