Shields duo aids Japanese hoopBy Doug SmithThe Canadian PressThe Japanese basketball program is borrowing some experience from Canada.Ken and Kathy Shields, who each at one time were head coaches of Canadian national teams, are helping the Japanese program as it prepares a junior women’s team for this summer’s world championships.Ken Shields is currently in Japan for a week-long training c wife Kathywill take her University of Victoria women’s team there for an exhibition series in early June.“They brought the team over here for a tour earlier this year, they enjoyed it and asked us to be consultants and help them out,” Kathy Shields said from her Victoria office. “It’s been a lot of fun, it’s good to see the program develop.”Basketball in Japan is very much in a growing stage, third in popularity among women’s sports behind soccer and volleyball.However, the Japanese senior women’s team put on a fine showing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics — beating Canada 95-85 in overtime for one of its wins — and the juniors are expected to contend for a medal this summer in Brazil, at an event for which Canada failed to qualify.n* t a L- an I tf
