Canada Cup shelvedBy THE CANADIAN/ PRESSThe 1980 Canada Cup hockey tournament has been cancelled, Toronto lawyer Alan Eagleson said today. The announcement at a noon news conference followed growing opposition by the public and National Hockey League players and executives to the planned September tournament, which was to have included a Soviet Union team.Eastern Canadians will also note that Muskie’s new job removes a powerful voice from the U.S. Senate in favor of a $750-million Dickey-Lincoln hydroproject to put dams on the St. John River. The Northern Maine project would put two dams near the Maine-New Brunswick border, flooding 120,000 acres including 6,000 in Quebec. Despite rising opposition to the project, Muskie was widely credited with keeping the project proposals alive for the last several years in the U.S. Senate.Muskie has opposed increased reliance on coal in the U.S., saying it could worsen the acidrain problem and lead to an environmental disaster for Canada and the U.S.Numerous athletes and officials had condemned Soviet participation while Canada and the U.S. are boycotting the Moscow Olympics in protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.Eagleson, chief international negotiator for Hockey Canada and executive director of the NHL Players’ Association, told the news conference:“During the last 24 hours I have been in contact with several NHL player representatives and the majority have agreed that they don’t feel they can support the 1980 Canada Cup concept with Soviet participation.“Many of the players realize that 1980 might be the last opportunity they have to represent their country in the tournament because of their age. But the players unanimously agreed that because of the sacrifice the Olympic athletes have made to not go to Moscow that we had no alternative but to cancel the Cup.”• Although the cancellation was made by Hockey Canada and confirmed by Hockey Canada chairman Lou Lefaive, it appeared it was the opposition voiced by NHL players that forced the decision after the federal government earlier said it would not ban participation by the Soviet hockey team. Many top NHL players had said they would not want to play if the Soviet team was involved.Related storv nngp 18
