SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 1972Mv .;-.,7HaAll-Pro Concept Merely One Of Canada’s DemandsOTTAWA (CP) — Permission to ice its best in world competition is only one of several conditions Canada wants accepted before it re-enters international hockey play.Lou Lefaive, chief of the health department's fitness and amateur sport branch and a director of Hockey Canada, said in an interview Friday that agreement by Russia, Sweden and Czechoslovakia to play National Hockey League players next September should not be 1 regarded as the prelude to Canada a gam taking part in world competition.! When the International Ice Hockey Federation meets this summer, Canada also will be seeking changes in the time international competitions are held, and better financial arrangements as conditions of returning to world hockey.A key change is timing. They are normally held in March, which is late-season for most Canadian hockey leagues and certainly not a time when professional players could be detached from their teams in the NHL.Canada will be asking for the tournaments to be held in September, normally training-camp time, or late May when theStanley Cup playoffs are over.Lefaive also said that it costs Canada up to $20,000 to travel to Europe for the championships.“European teams only have to take a bus,” said Lefaive. And since the tournaments areTn Europe 19 years of every 20, it’s obvious changes are needed in financial arrangements.”Canada also has some ideason which teams should be allowed to play in the tournaments. One thought is for the IIHF to send out invitations to top dubs for round-robin play botli in North America and Europe.Meanwhile Lefaive scoffs at talk that the best NHL players won't be available for the eight-game series against the Russians this September.Boston’s Bobby Orr and the cream of the NHL will play, he says.Soccer LeagueSet At KenoraKENORA, Oat. (Special)-The Kenora Soccer Association held its second meeting of the season Wednesday to begin mapping the 1972 season.President Diarmid McVicar announced there are now eight teams registered in the league, seven Kenora entries and one from Red Lake.It was approved that each team will play one exhibitiongame within the coming two weeks beginning May 7 and the regular 14-game schedule will commence May 20.The Kenora All-Stars will play host the Red Lake entry in an exhibition match May 14 at 2 p.m. No site has been chosen. The league decided each team will be allowed to register 18 players of which 14 must be signed and registered with theHockey Canada directors will meet within a few weeks to setup a special committee to pick the players and a coach.Lefaive thought it unlikely tliat an NHL coach would be picked or even want to coach the Canadian team. His own thought was that someone who had proved himself in the coaching line — such as Montreal's Toe Blake — would be selected. The Canadian team, after playing four games in Canada against Russia in early September, will play in Sweden before going on to Moscow to complete the eight-game series.Lefaive said the Canadians would spend five days in Sweden getting accustomed to the time change and the bigger ice surface. They will play in Czechoslovakia before returning home.
