Gym qualifying formal alteredTORONTO (C1J) - Canadian gymnasts will enter new Olympic qualifying competitions under an agreement readied by tlie Federation Internationale Gymnaslique (FIG), Dr. Bryce Taylor,president of the CanadianGymnastic Federation, announced Tuesday.Taylor said the FIG made a change in its qualifying requirements at a meeting last weekend in Vienna. Carole Anne Letheren of Toronto and Hartmut Fink, members of the FIG technical committee, Attended the meeting; as did Taylor and Lou Leiaive, president of the Sports and Recreation CeuLre in Ottawa.Taylor said the previous qualifying system of nneto-oue competition established in May, 11175, and followed by all countries wisliing to field full teams in the J976 Summer Games, was declared void by the FIG during a presidential committee meeting held- in Zurich, Switzerland, earlier this month.T h e new multi-national competition was organized r n d met opposition from many FIG members, including Canada, Taylor said.Canada had already successfully qualified both men’sand women’s teams under tlic original system, spending $53,000. Taylor said the CGF sent more than its entitled delegation to Vienna in an attempt to place alternative proposals hefore the committee.Under the new qualification format, each of the two qualifying compctilkms that countries. have had to date will count 30 per ccnt—for a total of 60 per cenU-leaving only 40 per cent of the final mark to come from the multi national competitions to be held in West Germany next week.The women gymnasts will compete in Hamburg May 1-2 and the men in Wiesbaden May 8-9 at the annual European tournament.“The proposal that tbe CGF recommended, was accepted and gives credibility and validity to those qualification competitions held to date,” said Taylor. ‘Tm extremely happy with the outcome.”Flkilling
