O It TIn The Diocese ofOUT WOIITilby pat McDowellJimmy Meyers of Laneri HighSchool in Fort Worth wrote us anice letter last week, giving someinformation on his school’s track Learn. We turned right around and nade a column out of it, said col-min following.Jimmy pointed out that emphasis .vas being put on tract this spring it Laneri and the results of a •ouple of meets seem to back thisrogram up.Jesuit edged Laneri in a meet it Dallas, 59-1/2 to 44-1/2, but.aneri took four first places in the lurdles, the mile the half mile and he 100-yard dash. In a meet April 0, the Fort Worth school won, epeating firsts in the hurdles, the lalf mile and the mile and addingdiscus winner to the list.Joe Sprekelmeyer is the boy who oes the hurdling, Floyd Molinauns the mile, Terry McDonnell the alf mile, and Jack Evans throw's he discus for the consistent point Idnners.Other members of the team in-Uide Charles Carminatti, Sean Mc-lahon, and Phillip Morris, all of horn contribute to a team whose lain fault appears to be a too nail squad. This really isn’t a I Hilt but in competition with big-er schools, a small school like aneri (190 enrollment) might of-*r good quality but little quantity. This situation will improve with le years but, for the present, as ng as a seven man squad can ld its own, it deserves a pat on ie back. Consider yourselves pat-I boys!Speaking of pats on the back, | e have a hearty one for two hools extremely far apart as for ; the diocese is concerned. Last eek’s mail also brought very nice Iters from both Mary Immaculate igh School in Wichita Falls and icred Heart High School in Tex-kana. ’Mother Agnes Boutke writes om Texarkana to explain a situation there that is uncommon, to say the least. They have twro high schools, one in Arkansas and one in Texas and both of them aresmall in comparison to the publicschools around that neck of the woods. So they combine to play football and basketball as the Catholic High Eagles under the sponsorship of the players’ fathers. Wewouldn’t have mentioned this except that Mother Bourke wrote such a nice letter and the fact that the parent-student program has been proved successful on a sports level does indeed warm our heart. You’ll be hearing more about the Eagles in later columns. jA similar situation exists at the Academy of Mary Immaculate up around Wichita Falls, where the Catholic Youth Organization sponsors athletic teams. Martha Applewrites that the freshmen hoys’ basketball team broke even in games with local teams this year (their first).Lettermen were Martin Leonard, Michael Hogemiller, Ronnie Wilde,David Davis and Louis Brown on a team coached by Donald Jaros. From the same school, Nekla Fowler reports that the girls kept busy, athletically, in. a variety of sports less dangerous than football. Softball, swimming and some trampoline work filled out theschedule on the prettier side of thesports program. That will about do it this week. We find ourselves running short of space (which, by the way, is a healthy column sign).Your SavingsIn Oak CliffOak Cliff SavingsMl, . ■ _ ■ Z. 9 C I i ;.|J !Bishop at Centre
