GARDEN VALLEY — Concluding its week of non-league play, Golden Sierra High’s baseball team collected its second win in three games after defeating Bear River (4-12 season record) Thursday. The Grizzlies, who hold a 3-12-1 season record, downed Bear River, 9-5 at home.Though Bear River is also a Golden Empire League opponent, the game was a non-league matchup.Southpaw Mike Cameron pitched his first complete game, striking out seven, walking two and surrendering seven hits. “He pitched his best game of the season,” Golden Sierra Coach Mark Hendrix said.Cameron credited the Grizzlies * collective effort. “I had a good defense behind me today. We played well together.”Phil Seabury led the Golden Sierra charge, going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs. He picked up a double, triple* home run and had five runs batted in. Seabury told Hendrix Thursday’s game was like no other. “I asked him if he’s ever had a game like this,” Hendrix said. “And he said, ‘No, not even in Little League.’”The Grizzlies scored three in the first inning and led 6-1, going into the sixth inning.With two outs, Seabury banged the first pitch for a three-run homer in the sixth. The Bruins added two more runs in :he seventh, but could not match the Grizzlies.Additionally, Dustin LaMantain went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Lance Nordby was 2-for-4 with a double.“(Golden Sierra) hit the ball well today; that’s why the score was what it was,” Bear River Coach Duane Zauner said. “Out of 15 games, we give up runs in the first inning in 14 of them. It’s hard to win games consistently when you’re always behind.”Hendrix was pleased with his team’s play of late.“ We’re starting to make routine plays more consistently,” he added. “We played a lot better the past few games.”
