STEEL PLANT-BEACH CITY.A tall youth, one Grinnell with a fascination for fast and quirky ones, was mainly responsible for the barbecue that took place Sunday afternoon on the Steel Plant grounds when a team of that name roasted before a fire of clever playing a certain aggregation of ball players with “Beach City” upon their shirts. The score, when the eggs were all counted and the bad ones thrown out was 6 to 5, the difference being due, strictly speaking, to the Youth Grinnell’s work, but of course the other players were not merely “those presenters.”The first part of the game was marked by a heavy cloud of defeat that hung over the heads of the locals. This cloud, like the dress suit coat, had a silk lining and pretty soon somebody tore a hole in the broadcloth and there, sure enough, was silk. Grinnell made it soft lor the Steel Plants. In fact he prevented something from happening that doesn’t happen very often. To be specific: He saved a steel (pause) plant (accent both alike) from being frosted just when it was budding. The steel plant is some times attributed to Wizard Burbank’s genius. But this is not germane to the question. The Steel Plants scored one run in the first inning, while the City people were goose-egged until the fourth. Then a two sucker, two errors and a wild throw, helped the'visitors to the extent of four runs. This called for a new battery and Manager Parjter put in Harry Hardy, of the Illirois Central league, and Walter Smith, catcher for the Newark base ball team. This helped some. The visitors were held down to one run in the last five innings. The Steel Plants gained two runs in the fifth and sixth innings and one in the seventh. During the last half of the ninth Grinnell ran around the diamond, making the final score 6 to 5.
