PTA’s 7-Up Slam draws huge, talented field againFrom Staff ReportsParticipants from over 15 cities in Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma journeyed to Culbertson Park Saturday and Sunday for the Paris Tennis Association’s 7-Up Slam tennis tournament.The weather turned out to be beautiful for the tournament, which was sponsored by Harmar Bottling Co. and the PTA.In Men’s A singles, top-seeded Mike Edzards of Paris defeated second seed Dieter Schreeb of Greenville 7-5, 6-2.Third-seeded Bouaphanh Pho-say of Paris gained the Men’s B singles title over Phil Spann of Paris, 6-3, 6-1.The top-seeded duo of Rick Spann and Edzards of Paris toppled the second-seeded tandem of Michael Ashley and Rusty Richey of Paris 7-6, 6-3 in the Men's A doubles competition.Un seeded Randall Moore ofSul-V!/phur Springs defeated top-seeded . Steve Shelton of Sherman 6-1,6-1 in the Men’s 35 division.In the Men’s 35 doubles finals, Phil Clark and Robert Bryans of Paris edged Jim Preston and Tom Harris of Paris, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.Top-seeded Schreeb came back to win the Men’s 45 singles title over Jim Davis of Paris, 6-2, 6-2.In Men’s 55 singles, the round-robin winner was Jeff Bayer of Commerce. Bayer won the same title in last year’s tournament. Truman Wester of Denison,another repeat winner from last year, teamed with Ed Lebanara of Sherman and held off Joel Casey and Jim Preston of Paris in a grueling three-setter to earn the Men’s 55 doubles crown, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4*In Boys 8-11 singles, top-seeded Cal Dudley of Paris defeated Brian Walker, 6-0, 6-1.Jesse Melendez of Greenville downed Kevin Harris of Paris 7-6, 6-4 to earn the Boys 14 singles title.Unseeded John Barrett of Greenville toppled top-seeded Will Walker of Paris 6-1, 6-4 to win the Boys 16 singles division.Cole Blakemore and Jason Jobe defeated their Greenville counterparts, Barrett and Steve Scott, to win the Boys 16 doubles title.Top-seeded Susan Reynolds of Sulphur Springs earned a straight-set victory over Tera Pate of Paris for the Women’s A singles crown.In Women’s B doubles, Reynolds teamed with Sharia Yarbrough of Greenville for another championship, 6-2, 7-5, over /WRoKh nnH Katie MoweTV ofPhoto by Dee EdwardsCONCENTRATION: Tracey Jones of Paris concentrates on a shot during Saturday’s action in the PTA 7-Up Slam tennis tournament. Jones, who goes to Travis Junior High, won the early-round match.Shanna Thomas for the Girls 14 singles title in a three-hour match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.Keilye Hays and Jennifer Walker teamed up to win the GirlsIn Mixed Open doubles competition, Chris Daniel and Clair Tate' of Sherman overcame Rick Walker and Dicksie Walker of Paris, 6-3, 6-3.
