Mrs. Edwardsrepresented her husband, who along with the three men was inducted Sunday night into the Canton Negro Oldtimers Athletic Association Hall of Fame.Edwards enters Hall of FameThe late Ernie Edwards of Massillon was inducted Sunday night into the Canton Negro Oldtimers Athletic Association Hall of Fame during ceremonies at Canton Memorial Auditorium.Also inducted at the 14th annual banquet were Marion Motley, Tom Harris, George Provens and Wendall Harris. Motley, Provens and Early live in Canton. Harris, a native of Canton, now resides inColumbus.“MEMORIES OF Ernie will never be forgotten, said Mrs. Evelyn Edwards, his widow, while accepting from association President William Lacy the trophy for herhusband. Ernie died in 1969.Edwards' twin sons, Dari and Terry, sang The Way We Were” as a thank-you to the association, with Terry providing the accompaniment on his guitar.Edwards joins fellow Massillonian Charles Anderson in the Hall of Faroe. He was inducted in 1973.Robert Fisher, Canton city service director, presented the candidates.I didn't know Ernie Edwards,” he said, but the way Ernie played basketball he fits in with the oldtimers who have been honored at Lheir finest hour.”THE INDUCTEES also received citations from Canton Mayor Stanley A. Cmich.Edwards won a second-team AU-Ohio birth in 1937 while playing under Paul Brown. He helped Massillon beat Canton McKinley in the state semifinals. But the Tigers lost to Hamilton in the title game.Motley, Harris and Early starred for Canton McKinley. Motley went on to become an Ail-American at the University of Nevada and an All-Pro fullback for the Cleveland Browns. He ultimately was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.Harris was an All-Ohio football player at McKinley. He went on to play pro baseball with the Cleveland Buckeyes of the Negro League.Early was an outstanding eager for McKinley from 1947-51.PROVENS, A native of Midvale, also played with the Buckeyes.Don Martin, vice president of the Oldtimers, and Sam Parks, sergeant-at-arms, received a meritorius service award. The Canton Urban League represented by Director BUI Smith, received the association’s Community Humanitarian Plaque.A resolution from Canton City Council, commending theassociation for its community activities, was read.AAU regionalfinals tonight
