Not pictured, Mike Carson.LynnttlIrvette Gets SecndSpAt SCA StckCliff Gottlob instructor in Auto Mechanics at Cowley County Community College recently took second place in a Sports Club Car of America stock car race in Stuttgart, Ark.Goottlob’s production, an A-class Corvette, took second to a Corvettefrom Wisconsin, in the 30-minute running time race with an airport circuit.Third place went to a Topeka Corvette and fourth was taken by an Italian import, Pantera.Eighth Grade TrackstersTake Fourth At El DoradoArkansas City’s eighth grade track and field team took fourth place at the El Dorado Relays with 33 points, one behind Carlton. Winfield won the event with 49 points followed by El Dorado at 43. Wellington scored four.The 880-yard medley team took second in 1:59, including James Hen-HHy Srntt Tinton .lames Crandall andIn the hurdle relay, James Fry, Joe Priddy, Tony VanSchuyver and Scott Tipton took third in 68.8. The 440-yard relay team of Canaday, Crandall, Hendrix and Tipton was fourth in 55.8 and Crandall used a 15-10 leap in the long jump.Tipton had a three-way tie for second in the high jump while Crandall wasSeven students accompanied Gottlob on the 1100-mile round trip, leaving Saturday, and returning in time for class Monday. Those making the trip were J.R. Cooper, Bluff City freshman; David Rosebeary, Arkansas City freshman; Doug Miller, Winfield freshman; Charles Barr, Arkansas City freshman; Mike Carson, Oxford freshman; Lynn Holt, Winfield freshman and Lee Grannell, Arkansas City freshman.The students served as pit crew members and were helpful in preparing the car.They changed the tires and rebuilt the suspension and brakes. They also installed a different engine and tuned it.Gottlob is a long-time racer from Arkansas City. I^ast July, he won third in a similar race in Wichita with his Corvette. Again, last June, in Victoria, Tex., he took first place in a stock car race when he was operating Cliff’s Tune-Up Service.
