Spring £rid Drills End On Optimistic Note♦Big Squad To Give Douglass DepthBy FRANK MARTIN, IIIThe Douglass High School football Lions officially com-pleted their four weeks of Spring training last Thursday. This squad, to be one of the largest and most impressive since 1959, totaled 42 players.A tremendous load will be placed on the senior members of the team next year. Linemen Frank Coleman, Kenneth 8imon, David Sampson, James Gabriel, and Walter Williams must come through if' the Lions art to have a winning season.Melvin Johnson, Walter Woods* DUUe Mttohatl, andKarl Armster saw considerableaction on the line last season when the Lions compiled a 6-2-1 slate. These boys, along with some newcomers will be facing enemy lines in September.4Three stars have downed on the gridiron igene during the past weeks. They are Steve Brown, Robert Brown, and John Darring. Steve Brown Is a rising freshman and is said to be extremely fast, powerful and deceptive at the fullback’s post.Coach James Bryant said that Steve Brown has the potential to develop into thegreatest fullback ever to put]on a Douglass uniform. Elven Herring, president of the Douglass Quarterback Club said that he expects Brown to be nothing short of sensational at fullback. Bryant alsoadded that Steve will be an asset to the team.Robert Brown, in his first year of Douglass football, has already Impressed virtually everyone that has seen him operate from Quarterback.Robert has a deadly Jump paw, a speoial talent for ball handling, a fine runner.John Darring is a freshman guard who has gained reepeotfrom all that have encountered him on the field. Darring is being called the most impressive new lineman in the Lions camp.Velver Anderson, L e R o yBeard, Willie Gaskin, andWilliam Moore are expected to see action next season. Earl Brown and Elbert Morris will be back at fullback after fine efforts previously.Kenneth Simon was named team captain, with Willk McBride and Booker Hall as co-captains. James Bryant is hekd coach, with Morris Williams and Charles Armsterassistant mentora.
