Weather Hampers Athletes■yOU CAN TALK ABOUT the weather* but there’s little you can do about it.Area spring sports coaches are finding that out. It is generally agreed that the current spring has thus far been just about the coldest and wettest within recent memory.Campbellsport track coach Bruce Wienserskl and Winnebago Lutheran’s head baseball man, Ray Seibel, have indicated that their progressTOM KOHLhas been hampered by the. cold and damp weather.Wienserskl* who has one of the area’s better distance runners in two-miler Glenn Stommel, feels that distance runners are particularly hampered by the unspringlike weather. He explained* saying,“Sprinters can work out indoors, but the distance runner needs room for his workouts.”Stommel* with a little cooperation from the weatherman, stands an excellent chance of breaking 10 minutes in the two-mile run this spring. He had a personal best of 10:09.3 last, track season.Winnebago’s Seibel has watched his Viking baseball team score only two runs in two non-winning starts this spring. “It’s just a case of the pitchers being ahead of the hitters in the spring. You can throw inside,” he declared. The light Viking bats have created a case of the jitters on the Viking team. “It places pressure on the pitchers and defense because they know they can’t afford to give up a run,” Seibel stated.Although the Bay-Lakes Conference, of which Winnebago Lutheran is a member, plays spring baseball and has no plans to change to summer ball, Seibel favors the sport in the warmer season.I think the coming trend is toward summer baseball. You can play more than 20 games and the weather is favorable,” the Viking coach stated.Seibel also points out that there are few opportunities In the spring to make up postponed games. “Our conference season ends the second week in May so WIAA affiliated teams can start tournament play,” he said. The veteran baseball coach noted that the unpredictable spring weather has had more than a quirk or two in store for his team. “It seems that most of the bad weather comes on days we’re scheduled to practice,” he stated.Campbellsport has one of the area’s better brother acts intrack in Rich and Larry Martiny. ‘‘They’re both comingalong faster than even expected,” Wienserskl said. The pair—junior Rich and sophomore Larry—were bothnaming in the 880 earlier in the spring, but Wienserski hopesto use Rich more in the 440 and keep Larry in the half mile.Rich Martiny showed glowing promise last spring whenhe zipped to a best of 2:04.5 in the 880 and brother Larry hada 2:09.1 clocking to his credit.• * *k -____. .ntn/l tKof Twn Divert! nrKfclltlV a mem-
