SEASON AT MONAHANS MAY I(Editor's Note: This Is the second of s series of stories on teams In the West Texas-New Mexico baseball league.0 2 0 0 2 2 2 2 0Skipper” Perry’s Wink Spudders will open the league season at Monahans on May 5, and if you can take Perry’s word for it, the Spudders will more than hold their own in the Class D league.Perry returned last week from atrip to Dallas and now has 20 players working out each day at the new park. The squad will be cut to 14.The club house is ready for occupancy, complete with showers, and the grandstand is nearing completion.Thumbnail sketches of the leading candidates— *Ulric Dopy” Bennie, 185 pound southpaw outfielder, who formerly played with Cisco. This little fellow hit .360 last year.Grady “Wild Bill” Johnson, also hails from Cisco. Bill, although now handicapped with a crippled foot, looks mighty good. He won 15 games last year, losing three, andhit .265. Johnson had a tryout with Beaumont of the Texas league in 1935. . .s-Novel “Barney Batnaill, anotherCisco boy, played in the Permian Basin league last year. His spot is second base. He weighs 145, but can smack the ball. His batting averagelast year was .300.Eddie Guynes, 145 pound shortstop, who covers his position well, hails from Dallas. He played with the state champs last year hitting .300 and believes he can do better this year.Bill Red” Hay, 155 pound pitcher, toiled on the mound for Minetal W'ells last year. “Red” had a good season with 25 wins and three lose*.He hit .269.Gewin Shores, 161 pound outfielder who lives in Breckenridge, but played with Coleman last season, arrived in Wink early last week. His batting average last season was .300.Robert “Battling Kid” Bevels. 168 pound outfielder, played with Genera! Crude last year in Hamlin. He hit .300.
