Catchers take a beating on black-and-blue day at FenwayANGELS: Myers suffers a sprained knee in a home-plate collision and the team’s bullpen receiver sustains a fractured forearm.By LAWRENCE ROCCAThe Orange County RegisterBOSTON — Mick Billmeyer was waving his white trophv above his head.‘I’ll cut this thing off and sell it for $10,000,’' Billmeyer said about the fresh cast on his fractured left forearm. “Use it to pay for my car.”He is the Angels’ bullpen catcher. He is not a man one might expect to have an effect of such a personal nature deemed to be worth such a large sum. But Bo Jackson had just autographed the cast and Billmeyer was joking — or dreaming — which he had earned the right to do Saturday, a bad day for Angels catchers.Billmeyer’s left ulnar was fractured by a John Dopson fastball— Billmeyer was expecting a slider — in the bullpen before the Angels’ 5-3 loss to the Red Sox.During the loss, starting catcher Greg Myers was knocked woozy by Mike Greenwell’s forearm in a violent collision at the plate in the fifth inning. Myers left the game and was taken to Children’s Hospital for X-rays on his left knee, which was determined to be sprained.Myers, who had to be helped off the field and was using crutches after the game, will be further evaluated in an examination today.Triple-A Vancouver catcher Jorge Fabregas (.118 batting average) will join the Angels as soon as possible but will not be activated until it is determined whether Myers will go on the disabled list.“When I got hit in the head, that kind of snapped my neck,” Myers said. “I had this ringing in my head (so) I didn’t feel anything (in my knee).”Billmeyer felt his pain immediately.“When it hit him, it made so much noise it was almost like a firecracker,” said Dopson, who was hit hard in four innings.Dopson had paused before a warm-up pitch and made a slight sweeping motion with his gloved hand. Billmeyer positioned his glove for the expected breaking ball, leaving his arm exposed for the fastball that came instead.Rodgers was similarly surprised by what happened to Myers. And for a moment he was extremely anxious. Chris Turner, the Angels’ other catcher, had missed the previous three games because he was attendingthe funeral of his nephew.“That’s the first thing I thought of,” Rodgers said.“Turner is back. Yeah, he’s back. The guy that really thought about that was Chili Davis (theteam’s emergency backup catcher). He came down there sweating like a son of a (gun).”VOTED #1 Hair Transplant Value5Randall S.
