Strikers Put Down Late Surf ComebackBy VICTOR COTA Register Sports WriterANAHEIM — The Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, known around the NASL as the new Cosmos, were as electrifying as their New York counterparts Wednesday night in a 3-2 victory over the California Surf at Anaheim Stadium.Their lineup, like the Cosmos,’ reads like a list of foreign ambassadors. There are three World Cup veterans on the rosier, including a European Footballer of the Year. They also play like the Cosmos Actually, these days the Strikers are playing better than the CosmosAnd, naturally, like the Cosmos, they also win.The Strikers were by far the most skilled the team the Surf has had to face this season, and it showed. For nearly 80 minutes the Strikers ran circles around the Surf and, according to their coach, Cor Dan Der Hart, “could have scored five or six goals.Though out-played from the outset, the Surf made a run at the Strikers with back-to-back goals within a two-minute span and almost pulled off an upset. We panicked,” Van Der Hart said afterwards. “It wasn’t necessary, but we panicked. That’s soccer though.Ray Hudson, the league’s stop scorer, added another goal, his fifth of the year, as he took a turn-around pass from Teofilo Cubillas in the second half and scored easily. The Strikers appeared headed for another rout (they have beaten the Surf 1-0. 5-0 and 6-31 until Francisco Marinho was replaced midway through the second half.“We could have scored five or six goals if I had left Marinho in, Van Der Hart said. “But he had a little trouble with his knee and I decided to take him out.SEE SURF.
