Grumich.tLAWRENCE, Kas., April 25.—Anunofficial elimination process expected to discover timber for theUnited States Olympic team turnedup twp likely contenders at thetenth annual Kansas r la\s here today.They are James A Bausch ofthe Kansas City Athletic club, national pentathlon champion anddecarhlon star, and Captain GeorgeSailing, hurdler and sprinter of theUniversity of Iowa.Battling showers and puddles onthe track in the last five events ofthe decathlon this morning. Bauschamassed a point total of 8022.4023in the 10-event all around test.rhis bettered the meet record ot7846.2205 that he established herein 1931 and approached the accepted world record—since beatenmade by Pavo Yrjola of Finland in1928. Yrjola’s total was 8052.290.Running on a rain-soaked trackbetween showers, Sailing equalledthe meet record of 11.6 in the 120-yard high hurdhs in both the preliminaries and the finals. Then hehelped the Iowa team tie the meetrecoid for the 480-vard shuttlehurdle relay at 1:02.5, and broughtthe half-mile sprint relay quartetinto a victory in the 880.Henry Brocksmith, University ofIndiana’s ace miler, withdrew fromthe new 1500 meter individual raceand ran anchor on two victoriousrelay quartets. Finishing first inthe distance medley, he steppedthe mile jaunt in 4:26.6. He ranthe last stretch of the 4-mile relay,also won by Indiana in 4:30Glenn Cunningham of the University of Kansas, winner of thebankers’ mile indoors at Chicago,established a mark of 1.02.5 inthe first running here of the 1500-meter event.Unfavorable conditions hamperedthe rec ud-seekers and Bausch’sdecathlon mark was the onlv newone set.The University of Missouri, producer of champion quarter-milerstook the university class mile relay in 3:20.4, just four-tenths of asecond over the meet record.Bausch’s improvement in thedecathlon marks him distinctly asa candidate for the all around jot)on the United States Olympicteam.
