Charleston and Mattoon.Green Wave coach larry Burgess has tagged Danville as the‘ team to beat .He lists Urbana and Mouni Vernon as definite darkhorse threats.” However, he thinks I he meet should be closely contested. “The points should really be cut up among a lot of the teams. Every team seems to have an outstanding individual or two.But. Danville appears to have the most overall talent. They have good balance plus some outstanding individuals. They’ve got two outstanding sophomore distance runners in Mark Chase and Mike Beresford. They have both run a 4:40 mile. And. Jeff Owen, who won the two-mile race last year, is back to defend his title. In Alvin Perryman. Danville has the slate triple-jump champion. I fact, he holds the state record of 49 feet. 44 inches. His best this year is 47-5 but he’s always a slow starter since he’s a basketball player and gels a late jump on track He may be hindered slightly Saturday by our short runway. He’s also an outstanding long Jumper and could win two events Saturday.Danville also has a fine pole-vaulter in Ned lake, who has gone 13 feet this season. Danville also is loaded in the relays which are important in Ihis meet because they’re worth double points Danville won the DecaturOpen recently and was second behind Champaign Central in last Saturday's Urbana Open Some other outstanding individuals entered in Saturday's meet will be:. . . lebanon's Don Burns. 4:23 mile. 1:56880;... Ubanon freshman Terry Grunder. 9:56 two-mile:.. I ebanoon's Rodney Brooks and Richard Norman, both 6-4 high- jumpers:. . . Granite City South’s Joe Ward. 51.2 in the 440;... Granite City South’s Doug Hartman. 54-4 in the shot and 156-8 in the discus;.. .GraniteCity North’s Mike Baker. 1:59 7in the and 9:36 in the two mile run:. . . Urbana's Bill Poland, 51.5 in the 440;. . Mount Vernon's Brian I-ee. 38.6 in the 330 yard low hurdles.I think Poland may be the best individual performer in Hie meet. Burgess says. Bruce Ballinger. Mark Haugh ami Otis Henderson in the 440 and mile relays for the first time Ihis season. I’m anxious to see what they will do. It's that time of the year we've got to be finding out where our strength lies in certain events.”Burgess also feels ace dietancc runner Bill Horn is capable of winning the mile and Iwo-milc runs if he puts his nund to it.The veteran Wave coach also feels shut-putters Kris Kelley and Dave Body can be up among the leaders And. Otis Henderson could make a run at the leaders in the 440 Unbeaten Mattoon. a last place finisher last year, appears the favorite in the girls division, but Burgess warns that “the team which has the sprinters will probably win.” He lists Centralia as a good bet to repeal Eight events lt;100, 220.' 860, mile relay, shot, discus, high jump, long Jump i will be competed in girls competitionCurrent records
