Li1ertyminates ReginalsBy JOE KAMMLAH Eagle Sports WriterCONROE — Liberty for all was the cry word at the regional 'track meet here Saturday af- -ternoon as the 3A school swept the meet with 63 points, way ahead of the rest of the field of 32 schools as AM Consolidated ended up a fourth place in the 880 as its best of the afternoon.JIM BRANNEN. the Tigers main hope at the meet, finished fourth in the 880 in a time of 1:58.7 while the winner, Charles Wilkins of Carver, ended the race in a time of 1:57.5.liberty won it’s eight straight meet of the season in taking the regional contest while the nearest competitor was Houston Elmore with 48 points.The Tigers’ Mike DeHaven finished fifth in the finals of the 120 high hurdles after taking a second place 14.5 in the preliminaries earlier in the day.In the only other Consol entry, the mile relay team finished sixth in that event. LarryWilliams of Sweeny took first in the 120’s in a 14.4 time.As a whole District 10-AAA fared better than most, grabbing seven first places at the meet and two second places. First and second finishes qualifed the particular entrants for the state meet in 3A competition.Three A competition took both relay events as Elmore took the sprint relay and Columbus s ihed first in the mile relay, tore took first in a time of j while Columbus finished the i e event in a time of 3:21.2.OTHER EVENTS, Charles Dawson of Elmore took the century in a 9.5 time as well as the 220 in a clocking of 21.5. Teammate Nester Day grabbed second in the 220 with a timing of 21.5 as well.The Elmore sprint relay team is made up of Larry Short, Day, Dawson and Edward Wilson, while Columbus’ mile relay team is composed pu of l,eon Thomas, James Rhode, Eddy Waddle and Raymond Moore.Kent Sims of Huntsville took first in the 330 intermediate hurdles for District 10-AAA while Wilson Whitley took first in the shop put for Brenham with aheave of 57-834.District 10-AAA’s second places came in the long jump with a leap of 20-114 by Jerry Dobbs of Humble behind Jimmy Barnes of Edna with a 21-9 leap and Day’s second place finish in the 220.CONSOL’S BRANNEN fought for the third place with R. D. Jenkins of Dickinson to the line while Wilkins and Chester Hill of SFA of Port Arthur battled for the 1-2 spots five steps ahead.In the 120 hurdles, DeHaven stayed with leader Larry Williams of Sweeny until the last hurdle when the sprint made the difference and the Consol senior dropped to fifth.The mile relay team of Consol battled for fourth and third throughout the race until the final leg, when Brannen. apparently tired from his 880 run, fell behind the field for a lastplace finish.IN THE OTHER field eventsat the meet, Brad Blair ofCarthage took the top spot in thepole vault with a 13-6 leap whileJerry Sowell of Edna took thediscus with a throw of 164-94.Wayne Sibley of West Orangewon the high jump with a 6-4 leapwhile Barnes took the long jumpwith a 21-9.Roland Brimge of Dickensontook the mile in a time of 4:28.9 while Danny Rollins of Liberty grabbed the 440 in a 49.2 timing.Point T otalsLiberty 63, Elmore 48.
