Probably the most famous of all local skaters and a man who won many international honors when in his prime, is Frank Stack, who even today can skate with the best of them. However, there is a young lady in Winnipeg who is already well on the way to winning almost. as many honors as Stack did. And to make her achievements all the more notable, it must be pointed out that except for some assistance given by the Powderhom club of Minneapolis and the Wenncll Post of the American Legion, Miss Whalley has had to pay her own way, buying her own equipment and supplying any necessary funds for trips, etc. On top^ of all this, she has. competed against and beaten *American skaters who have had the benefit of professional coaching.Miss Whalley first came into prominence as a. spced-skater in the 1939 season, when she was still , a junior. That year she captured the premier honors in the Silver Skates inter-club meet and • also finished third in her own club’s championship meet. In 1940 she moved up into the intermediate division and enjoyed another outstanding season, winning the Minneapolis trials, placing second in the dub championship and capturing the Silver Skates inter-club meet for a second year.+ * frStill in the intermediate class in 1941, Miss Whalley enpyed the greatest success of her' career up to that time-when-sheskated brilliantly to win. the' Winnipeg club championship, cop the Silver Skates inter-club meet honors for a third . time, and also take first place in the Jack White three-mile derby,an event open to senior as well as intermediate skaters.” * * «IT was as a sensor in the seasonof 1942 that Miss Whalley reallycleaned up in a big way.
