Michael Is most versatile kid I’veSun Valley’s. Nick Miron also scribbled his name in the Vanguard record book with a 49-101/2 heave in the shotput. And basketball standout Rich Grzeszkowiak hit one of the best Delco long jumps of the season, leaping 21-61/2.“He pulled a hamstring as a junior. Missed almost the whole season,” Barraclough mused. “It probablyhset him.back a little. He’s capable of a 22-foot long jump and maybe 44-6 in the triple jump.”.AT THE TAPE - Sun Valley’s freshman find, Jack Dirosato, took a third in the mile Wednesday. He’s run a 2:05.8 this season.:. Fulginitti finished unplaced in the 100, and third in the 220, timed in 25.1...He’s a bona fide 23.0 man in the 220,”Burdette said... Interboro’s track, most coaches agree, is about three seconds slower, for 440-yard events and longer, since it was resurfaced with 350 tons of gravel... Ufier is one of two triple jumpers already in the Penn Relays invitational triple jump event.ever had here.Fulginitti, you recall, finished second in the 1976 state indoor championship meet’s 1,000-yard run. Check the voluminous Interboro track and field records Burdette has stuffed in his attache case, and you’ll find Fulgmitti’s-? name listed in almost every distance and relay event.“He’s gonna go in the sprints. You’ll see him in the 100,220, and the mile relay,” Burdette insisted. No, Burdette isn’t a candidate for. the funny farm. In an uptight age infatuated with dictums like!) ‘Winning isn’t everything - it’s the only thing,’ track and field remains a ‘fun1 sport at Interboro.Winning,- however, is woven deeply into the tapestry that is the Interboro track and cross-countryprogram. And a long proud tradition of distance runners is the fiber from which Burdette spins success in bothsports. His teams have won eight cross-country. Section championships in the laSt'lb years. Interboro track teams under Burdette annually . overshadowed Delaware County competition until the balance of power shifted toward Chester High in the last few seasons.“Yes, distance runners are a j-tradition; at Interboro, Burdette rifeid. “We’ve had, I think, either the otf^eCbnd best haif-miler in the r county every year since 1970.“We’ve got seven milers this year who can go between 4:29 and 4:43.1 doubt if there are too many teams . around with that kind of distanceIntense, demanding, a curious blend of imperiousness and im-petuousity, Burdette pushes, his athletes the way he pushes himself... Once ran his indoor track program from a wheelchair after a. pee operation. Screams himself hoarse by mid-season. ;. /-:“I blew my vocal chords at the indoor championships,” he shrugged. “I’m petrified I’ve got polyps or something. My wife finally cornered me into going to the University of Pennsylvania for an-examination.” ,Wednesday was a chance for; Burdette and his “plod squad” to ; relax. Interboro’s four mile relay team - Fulginitti, Pat Smart, Rich McCauley and Tom Peel won the Delco Relays’ four mile event for the third straight year on Saturday.Even with Fulginitti trying starting blocks for the first time in :v his high school career, the Bucs had little trouble outdistancing Sun Valley. The final arithmetic was no-'40: 1“We're going to break the school (four mile) record (8:19.9),l Burdette said, looking ahead to this weekend’s Penn Relays and beyond. “I want these kids to be as relaxed ; as possible... Today, we’re trying to -give some youngsters an op-- -portunity to score some points.”The Bucs swept 13 of 17 events against Sun Valley, but John Squire- 'Wasrriterboro’s lone double winner. Squire won the two-mile, and cruised across the finish line tied with teammate Tom Peet in the mile run.Meanwhile, Sun Valley, coachedby Dick Barraclough, squeezed plenty of mileage out of its four wins before running out of gas.Brian O’Hara, the meet's other double winner, erased the Vanguards’ school record in the high jump and won the HKiyard high hurdles. The slender, spindly-legged senior easily cleared 6-2, bettering the old 6-0 mark on his first attempt. Interboro’s Kevin Ufier also got off a 6*2 jump on his third; tryr but had to settle for second place on the basisUfier. who took the triple jump with a 45-3 1/2 leap, narrowly missed topping the Interboro high jump record (6-3) when he nudged the bar off its standard while attempting to clear 64.SUMMARIESTWO MILE RELAY - Interboro (Jim Strain, Wally Douglas, Ecic Cell, Bruce Young), 8:52.7.120 HIGH HURDLES - Brian O’Hara, SV, 17.3.SHOTPUT - Nick Miron, SV, 49-101/2.100 YD.
