By CHARLESWAGNER Register Sports EditorSandusky may not have enough raw talent to make a run for the Class AAA state track championship, but Coach Wes Hartsook has an abundance of depth on the 1972 squad.Coming off a sensational performance in winning the famed Mansfield Relays, the Blue Streaks now center their attention on the 11th edition of the Sandusky Relays.HARTSOOK was disappointed a year ago when his cindermen trailed Upper Arlington by narrow margins in both divisions. Uper held a 60-54 margin in the Open Division, and a 66-62 nod in the Relays Division as a result of a disqualification for SHS in the shuttle hurdles relay.With more depth than ever before, theI ^___w as . The Big Blue won the title outright in 1967, but shared honors with Cleveland John Marshall in both 1964 and 1965 with the identical number of points. 44.However, the Streaks have been runner-up in the Open Division four years in succession, and six times altogether.It’s been a different story in the Relays Division. Sandusky has captured titles six times, including three years in a row starting in 1963. The Streaks have been second on four other occasions. In fact,Sandusky has never been below second in the Relays Division in the meet’s history.SANDUSKY MAY BE challenged for the first time in six years in the discus relay. Hartsook is going with Scott May, Stan Johnson and Jim Hall. May has come on rapidly and hurled the platter 165-7 earlier this week. Both Johnson and Hall are just sophomores. SHS has won the event five years in a row.Sandusky has also dominated the speed relay, winning the event three times in succession, and eight times in the last nine years. However, Toledo Lib-bey is the favorite this time around.HARTSOOK HAS lost sophomore ace A1 Mayfield for the year with an injury, but can choose from Willie Jordan, Lewis Walk, Rolland Kurtz, Glenn Shaw,and Sid Aaron. He also has the same group to pick from in the 880-yard relay, an event in which the Streaks are shooting for their fourth straight title.Sandusky is also strong in the shuttle hurdles with May, Jim Fantozz, Jordan, Velma Evans and Morris Lane the candidates.In the two-mile relay, Hartsook again has a strong contingent in Bob Fair, Osmond Pearson, Brent Fahrer, Paul Leslie, and Ernie Ferguson.Hartsook is also banking on his long jump trio of Evans, May and Bob Sherman. The Streaks have also won this relay event three years straight.IN THE OPEN division, Stan Johnson is a contender in the shot put, and May is the leader in the discus.However, SHS may have trouble earning points in the high jump and polevault, and the long jump is up for grabs.Fantozz is the best in the field in the 120 high hurdles, but Libbey also has its own standout in Rick Leasure.Hartsook may go with Fair, Leslie or Pearson in the mile, and either Pearson, Leslie or Fahrer in the 880. Leo Ferguson is a strong contender in the open quarter for the Streaks.UPPER ARLINGTON has strength in the field events with strong performers in the pole vault, shot put and discus.Although there are 12 teams in the field, the spotlight is expected to fall on Sandusky and Upper Arlington once more.This time, Hartsook hopes to reverse the order of the 1971 finish and come away with two championships,,The running events will begin at 2 o’clock at Strobel Field with the final event — the mile relay — slated for 4:45.
