I’m only 30 years old.” And then somehow got hooked on running. The guy is Steve Samuels. One day he was sitting around the house when his son Mike yelled at him to come upstairs. Idon’t remember what it was for, but 1 ran up the stairs, and at the top of the stairs I bad to stop and catch my breath.”It wasn't so much that Samuels was out of shape. But he did smoke.’ 'That’s one of the reasons i never went out for track in high school,” he said,‘ ‘because even back then I was smoking. ’ ’ So Samuels started running — to quit smoking. At first.”1 jumped rope in the garage for about a month, ’' he said.1 ’Then i spent $32 for a pair of shoes. The first day 1 ran a mile. That didn't seem so tough, so the second day 1 ran two miles, i did that for awhile, then I ran three miles a day for a couple of months.”Samuels is up to around 60 miles a week now, at least when he’s running competitively, going ten miles three times a week, 16 miles a couple of days, and maybe putting la one 28*20 mile day.Samuels doesn't quit in the winter either, defying Mother Nature by stepping off four or five miles daily when he can get out the door.“The first year I ran pretty much by myself,” Samuels said. J., flew to Boston Sunday, and plan to spend the week there. (No word about how he fared in the Monday race had been received as of Tuesday morning. But it took quite an effort just to get there. You don't just show up at the starting line of the Boston Marathon. Par* ticipants must belter a set qualifying time, in 4 this case two hours and 50 minutes for 26.2 miles, sometime during the previous year, Hendrickson earned his way to Boston with a clocking of 2:48.53 in the TV83/Hook's Three Hivers Festival(Continued on Page 2]i...tL-£V.vp;J7r.: :7Tv ••. ’ik3»:T. v rA 4. ?-•.
