Fiesta Week.Lacrosse added to FiestaThe San Antonio Lacrosse Club is adding a sporting flavor to Fiesta in 1975 with the first Fiesta Lacrosse Tournament, Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20.Modern lacrosse is a somewhat refined version of the brutal North American Indian game, which was much akin to tribal warfare some 200 years ago. The tournament promises an exciting, hard-hitting diversion to the usual Fiesta activities.It will be played at the Texas Military Institute football field in Alamo Heights, and will begin both days at 1 p.m. Tickets are 50 cents and proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.Joining the San Antonio Lacrosse Club will be three other members of the parent Southwest Lacrosse Association, the Dallas and Houston Lacrosse Clubs and the Tulane University team.San Antonio is^Th its second year as a league member. The team was formed in January, 1974, and played its first season last spring, finishing with a 9-2 record.Tulane was thejeague champion with an 11-0 record and Dallas took second place ahead of San Antonio with a 10-1 record. Other teams in the league come from the University of Texas, Texas AM, Houston and Louisiana - State University.The San Antonio team is a partnership of military and civilian players and is headed by retiret}, U.S. Army General George Ruh-len. Long since retire'd as an active player General Ruh-len is team president. He played lacrosse at West Point in the 1930’s.Four former All-Americans will play in tjjg tournament. They are: Rod Korba and Jeff Jewett, of San Antonio, Les Matthews, of Johns Hopkins, and Johnny McIntosh, (bpnerly of the U.S. Naval Academy.Jewett and Korbji both earned their honors at Denison University in Ohio in 1970 and ’71 respectively. Matthews was , .NCAA “goalie of the year* in 1972 and 1973 at Hopkins and McIntosh was a two-time All-American at Navy in '70 and ’71.Other San Antonjo notables are defensemerwWarren Stewart and Bob Richter, and attaekman Gary Shepard, all of whom earned all-league honors last year.At stake in the tournament is the Precedent’s Trophy, which wall be presented to the totfjjament winner Sunday.While generally accepted as the oldest sport m North America, lacrosse ih still a babe to the hill and ranch lands of South Texas.
