VOL. LV (55th YEAR) No. 124Lions Rally To Defeat Manhattana - ----Sixth Inning Spree Nets Five Runs For Columbia—Foe Held To Five Safeties ByWilkensDriving Tommy Garrison, Manhattan ace, off the mound with a five run outburst in the sixth inning, the Columbia nine scored a 7 to 5 victory over the Jaspers yesterday afternoon on Baker Field. In the sixth inning with two out the Lions finally shook off the lethargy which had gripped them so far this season and four stinging hits aided by Manhattan errors gave them five runs to sew up the victory.Whitey Wilkens, on the mound for the Columbia team, twirled a clever game, holding the Manhattan sluggers to five hits and striking out eight. A glance at the box score shows the control the Blue and White moundsman held over the visitors, for only one put-out was made by the outfield while the Blue and White first baseman and catcher scored twenty four between them. Wilkens himself had six assists and one putout. Of the five runs scored by the Green team only two were earned. Lions Retorn to FormThe most noteworthy feature of the game from the Columbia view-point was the return to hitting form shown by the Lions.Tommy Garrison pitched tight ball for the Manhattanites during the first five innings but could not keep the Lions away from the plate when his mates began tossing the ball all over the lot in the sixth inning. During his tenure the Jasper star allowed all the Columbia hits but kept them scattered, while striking out two. Hassett, a southpaw, relieved Garrison in the sixth and held the Lions hitless the rest of the way; only two men reached first on him, both by walks.Columbia showed an 'improved defense except in three instances. Although only one error appears in the box score there were two mental blunders committed which gave the visitors three runs. In the third inning Balquist failed to cover first as Wilkens and McDowell were fielding a bunt, this leading to the first Manhattan scores.(Continued on Page 4)Z. B. T. Defeats
