By BILL DALETimes-News Sports EditorSeveral Kingsport area ■ boys may be entered in the second annual Southern Interscholastic Track Championships at Evans-Collins Field in Knoxville next Saturday.The South’s finest high school track and field talent will gather in Knoxville for the event Which is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. ■The cream of trackmen from six states will he represented and last year’s' outstanding performances are certain to be surpassed in manyevents. „Those top-notch performers from the Kingsport area who may enter the meet are S. D. Dean, brilliant distance man from Dobyns-Ben-nett, Leslie Wright, the area’s top pole vaulter from Ketron, Buford Mullins,_ the sophomore weight specialist from Blountville, Don Booker of Dobyns-Bennett, and Jerry McClellan, the broad jump sensation'from Dobyns-Bennett.Wright and McClellan may not be ready for the events but have been working hard to get back into shape.. Wright has a pulled tlugh muscle while .McClellan has missed all the D-Bevents due to an injury.Both Wright and McClellan have been.wowing out and could be ready to competfe m theSouthern meet; , ...Most track enthusiasts believe that Wright can top 13 feet in the pole vault and McClellan 23 feet in the broad jump.Dean, one of the.finest Toilers to hit the area since Kent Osborne set records in that, event for Dobyns-Bennett back in the early 1950’s, could be a big threat to the mile record in : thegJQDean has already -turned 4:32 in the mile this year but has never, been pressed. •The record, in the Southern Interscholaslie Champions for the mile is 4:25.4 set by Morris, Williams of. .Murphy High of Mobile, Ala., m-last year’s'event.Mullins and Booker have tossed the shot 50 feet this season but would have a long, way to go to break last year record of 57 feet, 2 inches, set by Lynn Gammage of Cedartown, Ga., now ■ a U-T football candidate.Dean is also a big threat in the 880-yard run.
